Microsoft keeps trying to force Update 1903 onto my laptop

Lenovo Z50-70 laptop, with Intel I7 processor.
Background: Spring of 2018, update 1803 killed my laptop (along with many thousands of others). Since then I have told Windows that I have a "metered connection," so I can decide when to install updates. That method has worked fine until this week.
A couple of months ago I tried to install Update 1903 using USB installation media. It got to the very end and failed, rolling back to 1803. A couple of weeks ago I tried again. Failed again.
For the last couple of days, Microsoft has overridden my selection of "metered connection" to try to force the installation of 1903. Seven times it has failed and rolled back to 1803. It's waiting for a restart now, so it can fail again. (The definition of insanity... you probably know the rest.)
Please, can someone tell me what to do to end this frustrating cycle?

Hi, MS's stated policy - now implemented- is to bring end of life machines up to the latest build. Each build has a limited life as stated on MS's lifecycle.

1803 is nearing end of life. To provide continuing support and updates, PC's believed compatible will be updated. You can read about this on the Internet and in the News section of this forum.
    e,g,
Microsoft now auto updating Windows 10 version 1803 and older to 1903

As for 'forcing' updates, that's what you signed up for when buying the Home edition. Had you wanted more control, you ahould have bought Pro. But with 1903, MS as acknowedged somewhat the problems caused by faulty upgrades and updates being delivered without giving Home users any option, and adds some degree of control.

As to using a 'metered' connection- that's a very weak method of trying to avoid updates and has been known as such for a very long time. If you want to block updates here's one way:
Stop Windows 10 Updates Properly and Completely

Now, to resolve the problem of why the upgrade is failing, you need to post:

    setuperr.log
    setupact.log

(search to find where these are)

The error number and text displayed when the upgrade failed
The full specs of your PC (see mine for comparison)

How much free space do you have on your PC?
Do you have the Intel Rapid Storage driver installed? (See 2nd point under Known Issues)

Please perform some basic checks on your system:
From an admin command or powershell prompt run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    If ok similarly run
    SFC /SCANNOW

    If ok, try this:
Create a current disk image (e.g. using Macrium reflect) - so you can get back to where you are if anything goes badly wrong).
    Download the 1903 iso.
Ensure your BIOS is up to date.
Disable any antivirus or security software.
    Disconnect any unnecessary peripherals.
Perform a clean boot (Google if unsure)
    Log in as normal.
Rt click and Mount the iso (Mount will not be available if you have associated iso file with another program)
    Open the new drive created.
    Run setup.exe

When offered the choice of receiving updates, choose not to do so. (You can also disconnect the internet).
This simplifies, shortens the upgrade and reduces possibility of failure.

Note any symptoms of failure accurately.

(For interest- well known on this site and available widely is the WUMT (Sledgehammer) free tool to control Windows Updates).

Back in the day.. when I was a wee lad, and had capped data, I used an app called TinyWall to tame Windows update - it worked well until MS decided that it had to force firewall rules etc (I posted about it in the AV section) which in effect nullified it - but just recently I re-downloaded and installed it and it seems to work again as before - it's the simplest way to oppose WU intrusion.

Thank you so much for your reply.

Here's a full list of possible log file locations, which differ depending on how the upgrade failed:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...sion-of-window

setuperr.log has nothing in it. It would not let me attach it.
When there is something to upload, please zip (compress) the file and upload the (much smaller) zip file.

Regarding your CBS.log - there are reports of failures here being related to Defender - a MS bug. I don't personally know if that affects build 1803

Windows 10 SFC /scannow Can't Fix Corrupted Files After Update

Again- how much free space do you have on C: ?
Again- what was the result of running chkdsk?

    - note the 3rd point in the table. Do you have this installed?

Please post a full screen screenshot of your disks and partitions using Minitool Partition Wizard, expanding any columns as necessary so all text is visible.

Please confirm your upgrade attempt was without accepting updates.

I found your thread here on 1803:
Update to Windows 10, Version 1803 kills Lenovo laptop

    E.g.
Apparently your laptop is one of those that has a Conexant audio chip Microsoft is putting to sleep , i have disused the topic in full here : On buying new or used Laptop / PC beware of Conexant chips
you might still be able to upgrade but after uninstalling your audio drivers .
