    Windows update service problem.

For the last three days, I have run into this message:

    Windows update service problem.-windows-update.jpg

Now I have seen vague messages before from the Windows Update Server, but with no error code, I am assuming that I am not the only one trying to troubleshoot what is going on with the Windows Update Service.

Furthermore, who is this "We" that ran into a problem when checking for updates? As far as I know, I am the only one at my computer checking for updates, so when this "We" situation comes up, is there someone I should be conversing with before I check for updates?

My router firmware is up to date and I can connect to any website I wish on demand; so I don't understand why I can't connect with the Windows Update Server.

I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter, and of course it came back with the oh so famous "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem" ------- So can anyone confirm this is a Windows Update Server problem on their end; because it sure isn't on mine?

All virus scans came back clean and no SFC corruption of any kind either.

    I am out of ideas.

Hi, you can try the tenforums tutorial on Reset Windows Update, and see if that resolves the troubleshooter issue. (The bat file includes a lot of what is mentioned in the link following I believe).

    Then there's e.g.
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...0-39fdd61ef57b

    and - rather different-
We couldn't connect to the update service in Windows 10 1809

The 'We' simply represents 'MS + Windows'. If it were 'I' that might read even more oddly. Of course it could have been worded impersonally 'There was a problem .....ing...'.

There could simply be a problem connecting to the servers of course, and occasionally that has needed a little patience. But after 3 days + that should have been enough one might think.

    Thank you @ dalchina!

I was wondering if you might know if the "Network List Service" in Services has anything to do with the connectivity to the Windows Update Service?

I checked my "Services" by way of comparison to a list of default settings for the services and my "Network List Service" was switched to "Automatic-Delayed Start" when according to Windows 10 "default services list", it should be set to manual.

I changed it to what it should be and the Windows Update Service seems to be running properly now.

I'm wondering how services presets are being changed with Cumulative Updates because I am the only user of this computer and somehow the services change with Cumulative Updates it seems????

    Glad you found the problem.

    Agreed- that's what mine is.

I'm not yet on 1903 (by choice for now) so can't comment on side effects of updates of that, except to say I've not seen any other similar report - yet. So I'd wonder if something else were going on..
