Can I work or surf the 'net during an update?

My machine is updating to 1903. I can see my desktop, and the update is being done in the Windows Update app, and taking quite some time.

Can I do any work or surf online while this is happening?

    Hello,

    Yes, you sure can.

When it has finished downloading and installing the update, you will be prompted by notification to restart the computer for the update.

Thanks, good to know. Downside is when I try it, the laptop slows to slower than a snail. Took 15 minutes to launch a browser. Then it took another 2 minutes to close it. Didn't even try to surf.

In the meantime the update froze at 43% and now seems to be stuck there.

If it's slowing down that much, it may be best to let it sit without using until the update has finished.

43% of which stage? Downloading or installing? Either way, it is a slow process, you'll just have to be patient. For what to expect, see my post where I timed the stages as windows update upgraded one of my machines....

How long does the 1903 upgrade take using Windows Update?

It took approx. 6 hours for the one laptop to finish, and the other is still working on it 9 1/2 hours after it started. Almost done, though, but wow....

    Hi,
What are these single core processors

Something to be said for downloading the iso and mounting it instead of jacking with the update process.
It's best not to really use the system while doing large updating all you do is short change resources from the installer.

It's a lot slower than using an ISO to upgrade, however many processors you have....

    So true

That my preferred method, but I thought I'd see how Windows Update compared. As I said in this post....
