Windows 10 Update hangs at Checking for Updates

I wonder if anyone can help me with this problem which has arisen recently. I have Windows 10 Pro Version 1903 but when I try Windows Update via the Settings app, it hangs for some time and eventually gives:

Checking in Event Viewer I find messages such as:
Windows 10 Update hangs at Checking for Updates-image.png

So I know that Windows Update is finding updates on-line. But what is the error 0x800705b4?

I have tried deleting contents of folders C:\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore and Download and also running the troubleshooter for updates in Windows 10 but this simply hangs with message:

Windows 10 Update hangs at Checking for Updates-image.png

    Can anyone advise?

The error code which you have provided is related to Windows defender. 134 people were helped by this reply

Unfortunately, I find that the links above have not proved helpful to me.

In services.msc I see several services related to Windows Defender but it seems to me that they are set correctly as:

Where Windows Firewall is on. On another PC of mine the settings are the same and Windows Update works correctly.

The only other third party software I use for anti-virus purposes is Malwarebytes but I have no reason to believe that this is to blame.

    Please try
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10
    then the troubleshooter again.

    Another possibility is
Tweaking.com's free cautious repair tool, selecting the relevant repairs only.

As a matter of routine and as a basic check, run
    chkdsk c: /scan
from and admin command or powershell prompt.

    You can similarly run
    SFC /SCANNOW

If no joy, head for an in-place upgrade repair install. This keeps all progs, data and most settings. For that you would need an iso of the same build.

You could of course download the update and try installing it manually. But you may be left with the WU problem even if that works.

You could spend a long time having someone suggest ideas and trying to fix this, or get it done (probably) with that.

I solved this problem by trying various of the suggestions in thread https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...80e49f2?auth=1

Windows Download appears to be working now.

The Reset Windows Update tutorial I quoted does all of those commands and more as a single bat file.

Anyway, you found a solution, so that's good.

Thank you for letting us know and remember to mark it solved so people don't spend time reading it.

Just for the record, when Windows Update has hung for me in the past, and Defender has been implicated in the causation, I've sometimes (but not always) been able to overcome that by using the update function inside of Defender instead.

If the update works inside of the Defender GUI (as shown by click "Check for updates") then WU will start working again, too. Go figure!
