Error 0x80070002 when trying to update Windows

I have been having issues for months with Windows 10 updates failing due to Error 0x80070002 on my gaming laptop. The full message reads:

    2019-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4503286) -Error 0x80070002.

I am currently on version 1803 (OS Build 17134.590) and I'm being told "You're currently running a version of windows that's nearing the end of support. We recommend you update to the most recent version of Windows 10 now to get the latest features and security improvements."

I have followed the instructions on Error Code 0x80070002 Fixed – Eassos Step-by-Step Tutorial but this hasn't resolved the problem. Does anybody know how to fix this?

Hi that article is a bit fuzzy and old, even referring to a Fixit tool... long long ago in a Windows far away...

    1. What does the WU troubleshooter actually report?
Error 0x80070002 when trying to update Windows-snap-2019-06-27-16.02.14.png

    2. If that fails, please try this:
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

    Then try the troubleshooter again.

If that fails, check basics: please run
    chkdsk c: /scan
from an admin command or powershell prompt.

If that fails, post back. If ok then
    sfc /scannow
from an admin command or powershell prompt.

    Please advise the summary result.

    If ok, retry Windows Update.

Note that MS's policy at end of life is, assuming your system is deemed compatible, to apply the relevant feature update (build upgrade).

You are of course always free to search this forum e.g. for

    0x80070002 solved

noting solutions for one PC may not necessarily apply to another.

Notice the value of using disk imaging routinely as is so often advocated here in this:

I ran Windows Troubleshooter and it says Checking for pending updates - Fixed, Windows Update components must be repaired - Fixed and Potential Windows Update Database error detected - Detected. No further option to resolve it, it just gives the option to close the troubleshooter or give feedback.

Tried step 2 and troubleshooter still says the same thing.

Chkdsk was fine, but sfc resulted in this:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at
windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.

Retried windows update and still getting the same error. I'm not sure if this could be related, but if you look at my previous post from Aug 2018 I had an issue with my User folder, could this be in some way related?

That seemed to be fixed- did WU run ok after that?

    Cumulative Update KB4503286 Windows 10 v1803 Build 17134.829 - June 11

Note the ref. to the Servicing stack update (probably not really significant or related).

Try downloading the update manually and installing it.

Normally if difficulties continue the answer would be an in-place upgrade repair. Noting you are on 1803, it would be worth considering an upgrade to at least 1809, preceded by creating a disk image just in case. (E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) ).

I don't remember if WU worked properly before or after that.

I just manually downloaded Cumulative Update KB4503286 Windows 10 v1803 Build 17134.829 - June 11 and that seems to have worked. I went back into Windows update and now it's telling me I can update to feature update 1903, but that is also failing with error code 0x80070002. Is there a way to manually download that as well? Confused as to what is causing this

Unfortunately not every problem has a readily identifiable individual fix, although naturally everyone wants an instant answer of that sort for free... . As mentioned if straightfoward fixes don't work an in-place upgrade repair (same build) or an upgrade may well fix this and restore services to default, clear data, reset settings etc..

1903 works well for many, but some experience particular issues. As with any major change, before upgrading, make sure you have a current disk image (e.g. Macrium reflect - free- plus external storage for image files) so you have a way to restore your system. The forum recommends the routine use of disk imaging time and again.

You can create a bootable disk to install 1903, or simply download the iso - use the Microsoft media creation tool (Google). Tutorial available in the Tutorial section.
