How long to install 1903 update--new laptop

I have a new W10 Acer laptop. Very nice, fast, SSD drive.
So Update says it has 1903 awaiting my decision to d/l and install.
Yet, I keep reading horror stories of problems or it takes MANY hours to fully install, often getting stuck on XX% for many hours.
Yet I've heard for some it took 80-120 minutes.

I guess I'm seeking some feedback. How long does it take to install?

Also, if I wait another month, is the install likely to go better (ie: MSFT improves that install)?

I downloaded the 1903 iso and ran the setup.
It took about 2 hours (many steps with many reboots) to update.
In my case it worked without issues but there are many users that encounter problems like USB not working.
Just after installation, WU did a huge update on it (probably to fix the 1903 bugs).

I have done about 6 Windows 10 version updates, every 6 months with a laptop with a standard mechanical HDD of 1 TB and plenty of spare space like 500 GB with a fairly slow download speed.

All have been done without any major problem. They have taken roughly 4-5 hours. All have had multiple reboots and re-starts and featured apparently stuck % progress counters and that sort of thing, but that is the norm.

That would be rather worrying to a first time consumer with a new Windows 10 Laptop. To me it is just a tedious 'feature' of Windows 10 and the version updates.

Obviously with an equivalent SSD it would be quicker. If you have a slow download speed correspondingly longer.

No point what so ever in waiting a month. In 3 years there has been no real change at all.

Having experienced all this tedium for 3 years, I just chill out, schedule in the time it takes and get it done.

I just installed the feature update on my main rig (System Spec 1) from Windows Update. Here are my results:

    • Start , getting things ready: 5 min
    • Download: 5 min
    • Installing: 25 min
    • Restart to Desktop: 6 min
    • Reconfigure all my custom settings: 20 min

As a routine for upgrades I always do a Windows Disk Cleanup including System Files prior to starting the upgrade, in addition to a fresh disk image in case anything goes south.
I also always do the upgrade in the off-hours (USA time) and not in the middle of the business day. The servers seem less busy early in the morning or late at night and downloads go faster.

    Results!

Thanks for all your responses. So, I crossed my fingers and got busy. It looks like it all went well.
I now have 1903. I suspect there will also be some security updates when I check later today.

    Here are my results:

    Preparing/Getting machine ready —- 5 minutes

downloading —- got to 100% in 35 minutes. Then stayed at 100% for 20 minutes

    Pending Install — 5 minutes

So the above took exactly one hour. Continuing:

    Installing — about 30 minutes.

    Configuring/restarting/lather-rinse-repeat a few times -- about 13 minutes.

In short, just under 1 3/4 hours.

You can do a Winver right now to see what level you are at.

WIN Key + R > type winver, enter

You will have .Net updates, and a cumulative to bring you to 18362.207. Plus an MRT and Flash Update, most likely.

    Congrats on getting there!

Don't forget to do an image backup..................

this is probably the upgrade that screwed up a few things display wise. Why do they fix that which is not broken?

They are part of the Patch Tuesday package, usually. If you check for updates and they do not show, you probably already have them. If not, no concern. About 2 weeks till next PT. The MRT is just a Defender scan anyway. The Flash is NOT Adobe Flash Player, it is the flash activex plugin used by IE and Edge. Check your installed updates, it's probably there.
