Latest Update to v1903 Hangs a 7% Install

Using a Dell Inspiron15 3000-3552, Windows 10, 64-but, v1809 build 17763.557. I attempted to update from 1809 to 1903 via normal update and the download took forever, then it just it just stuck on 7% during install. I reset the update and thank Heavens it actually reset, so now my PC is back to ground zero. Not sure it is worth the effort and wasted time to do this update. Suggestions?

    Hi dustymars.

First I would start with making a system Image of all the partitions necessary to start Windows. One tool is Macrium Reflect.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

Like you said, thankfully it reset. With a system image the risk of not being able to restore is greatly reduced. Create and test boot media for what ever tool you choose.

I would recommend the Media Creation Tool to create an ISO on C:, then mount ISO and run setup.

Disconnect any gear not required for basic boot, external drives, remove sd cards, writing pads, game controllers etc. Remove any third party AV's.

Myself I would leave the update alone for a few more weeks. I've updated test machines but my daily device is firmly on 1809. There are lots of known issues. Reference this thread.

Of course with a working restoration method you make the final choice.

Yabbadabbadoo ! All I can say is this -

I have Windows 10 version 1809 and it is working perfect.

Windows 10 1903 May 2019 Feature Update has recently appeared on my updates as an optional "install when you are ready" update. It is kept in permanent suspension from normal updates.

Checking the web on this Windows 10 1903 May 2019 Feature Update, I find that even experienced users have had a lot of trouble downloading and installing this update and trouble thereafter with auxiliary programs failing.
Complaints of frozen downloads or installs, being stuck at incomplete for many hours and having to attempt a traumatic restore of previous Windows, plus more problems.
Some have installed it without trouble and it is working well. Who Dares Wins ?
It depends upon your individual PC, device and set-up.

My decision is to put this update on ice until such a time as it has been officially cleaned of trouble by time, feedback and Microsoft updates and auxiliary programs have had time to catch up and become compatible. After the October 2018 debacle with Windows 10 Feature Update 1809, I am going to tread very carefully, observing the golden rule - If it 'aint broke, don't fix it...

2 - 4 months delay in installing 1903 should be adequate for debugging.

Windows 1903 incorporates a sandbox, which may conflict with users who use Sandboxie.

Windows 10 version 1809 end of service life is May 12, 2020, so there is no rush to install 1903.
End of service life for Windows 1903 is December 8, 2020.

I think leaving this update alone for a few more weeks is the best advice. Some updates are a pain and these days I'll wait. Thanks.

Good advice. Even after 60 years in the computer business (analog then digital) I find some of MS's recent updates leaving me thinking as a novice!!!!! Maybe I just get impatient but after an hour with an update stopped at 7% installed one may just have a problem...…….

well, I thought that too, but slow would be lightening speed compared to this update.

    Hi,
Did it yesterday for the iso option it took for ever
Also turned out ms activation servers were out too so says the message at activation section.

So downloading the esd or what ever it is and install it locally probably would save some time
I just download and mount the iso personally and probably should of gotten it from somewhere else too
