    1) Before performing the in place upgrade repair:

    a) make sure that the windows drive has > 30 GB free space

    Code:
DriveLetter Size (GB) Free (GB) Device Path
    ----------- --------- --------- -----------
    C: 82.14 14.78 \Device\HarddiskVolume1
    D: 140.5 75.98 \Device\HarddiskVolume3
    E: 0 0 \Device\CdRom0
Free Up Drive Space in Windows 10

    2) Uninstall Iobit using the applicable uninstall tool:
    http://forums.iobit.com/forum/advanc...y-remove-iobit

    3) List all:
    anti-spyware software
    anti-virus software
    drive encryption software

    4) How come the operating system is unlicensed?
    Code:
    LicensingStatus : SL_LICENSING_STATUS_UNLICENSED

    5) Run HD Tune: (free or trial version) (all drives)
Post images into the thread for results on these tabs:
    a) Health (SMART)
    b) Benchmark
    c) Full error scan

    6) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    chkdsk /r /v
This may take many hours so plan to run overnight.
Run on all drives using the syntax: chkdsk /r /v c: or chkdsk /r /v d: changing the drive letter to the applicable drive.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>chkdsk /r /v c:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

    Type: Y
    reboot

    7) Use the text and images in this link to find the chkdsk reports in the event viewer > copy and paste > notepad > post share links into the thread
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10

The computer had BSOD in Dec 2018.

Windows will automatically delete memory dump files if free space is < 25 GB

    Code:
    Event[25885]:
      Log Name: System

      Computer: Tosh-3
      Description:
The dump file at location: C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP was deleted because the disk volume had less than 25 GB free space.

Well, the attempt to in-place upgrade to ver. 1709 (same version) failed as well--perhaps even more quickly than before. At least this time it did not delete my entire Download folder, so I suppose that is some kind of progress. I had the network disconnected completely.

At this point, we seem to be stuck again. My impression is that the DM log collector was able to collect a copy of msconfig32 (based on messages I saw go by in Command Prompt). Other than that, this does not seem like a successful enterprise, though it's been an interesting trip--thanks for that. I can continue to use 1709, it does work, and when I'm ready, I can try to do a clean install of ver. 1809. Or do you have something else in your bag of tricks?

If the steps/results are ok in post #31 then there are other options that may work before needing a clean install.

As the new update is out anytime now it may be worth waiting and trying that as if you do get yours working a week later it will try and update again so save 2 hours and wait

    1) Before performing the in place upgrade repair:a) make sure that the windows drive has > 30 GB free space

I think the only way I am going to be able to do this is to reduce the size of the D: partition, move it back to create free space in front, and extend the C: drive to be large enough. You show my free space as 14.78 GB, but Explorer tells me I have 22.9 GB free. I think I can add another 20 or 25 GB to C:

    2) Uninstall Iobit using the applicable uninstall tool:IObit.Com Forums
Sorry, thought I did this already. I may have had two Iobit programs, and uninstalled the other one.

    3. So far as I know, I don't have any anti-spyware software, any anti-virus software other than MS Windows Defender, or any drive encryption software. I understood that I don't need to worry about Windows Defender.
I have a program called "Clean-mem." I exited from it before running the upgrade. Do I also need to uninstall that?

    4) How come the operating system is unlicensed?Code:LicensingStatus : SL_LICENSING_STATUS_UNLICENSED

This is first I am hearing this. When I check my activation, it says "Windows is Activated with a digital license." It's Win 10 Pro, and it was upgraded from Win 7 after they released 10.

    5) Run HD Tune: (free or trial version)...
I used Free version. The laptop has an Intel SSD--240 GB, that is partitioned to C: and D: I am pasting in the results--everything looks good, so far as I can tell.

Trying to upgrade to version 1803, and always fails in Windows Update-tosh-ll-tosh3-240gb-ssd.jpgTrying to upgrade to version 1803, and always fails in Windows Update-tosh-ll-tosh3-240gb-ssd-hd-tune-health.jpgTrying to upgrade to version 1803, and always fails in Windows Update-tosh-ll-tosh3-240gb-ssd-hd-tune-error-scan.jpg

6)...Since it will take a while to re-partition, uninstall iobit, then run chkdsk with /r & /v, I am posting this much and will report the rest after I get the chkdsk report.

Here is the data on the disk scans:

After adjusting the partitions, I now have 47.7 GB free on the C: drive, according to Windows. BTW, I also deleted the Recovery partition, which I think was an old one, and used that space for C:.

Wininit only brings up scans of the C: drive in the Event Viewer. The first report below is from the command prompt scan for D:

There are websites with free cloud storage:
    a) one drive
    b) drop box
    c) google drive

These can be used to move files during the troubleshooting.

Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    slmgr.vbs /ato
Use the snipping tool to post a image of the results into the thread.

@ Samuria -- I've used the Storage tool without much luck. Also, with all the trouble I've had with different versions, I don't think I will have much luck trying with another new version, without doing something else.

@ zbook -- I have plenty of other options for storage. I don't think the cloud will help me much. The fact is, from everything you have said, I don't think I have enough room on C: right now.

Right now I am overwriting old backups and preparing to change partition sizes.

[Edit: The Chkdsk reports are now included in the post above.]

In addition to the above posts with the chkdsk results, I forgot to do the last bit you asked me to do--run slmgr.vbs /ato. Here is that result:

Trying to upgrade to version 1803, and always fails in Windows Update-image.png

Do you want me to try running the in-place upgrade to same version (1709) again at this point?
