Windows update automatically updated my system despite being Disabled!

I'm very disappointed to know that my Windows 10 Home 64-Bit Edition does not respect my privacy whatsoever. Last week I upgraded to Windows 10 Home Edition (clean installation) for the first time from my previous Windows 8.1 OS that I had running for 4 years.

I disabled Windows 10 Update from services after I updated it to 1809. But to my dismay Windows update automatically occurred and the Disabled turned to Automatic from the services list just a couple of hours ago. I never ever experienced such case with Windows 7 or 8.1.

Now I am beginning to wonder whether it is worth continuing the use of Windows 10! This happened even while I was gaming! I had a glimpse of lag after a couple of hours. I then checked Task Manager and saw that Windows update had automatically been switched on without my explicit permission.

Is there a solution to this issue? I know Windows update will turn on again. I want to know if it is really possible to disable it. If not I think I'll reformat windows soon and return back to 8.1 or 7. Forget DirectX 12 and all the other features. I don't care about them, if Microsoft has no respect I cannot support such operating system.

I was thinking to buy a serial to activate Windows 10. But now after such experience I think I won't bother unless there is a solution to this so it does not return back.

I didn't buy Windows 10 yet. But I downloaded and installed it from a blank DVD on a freshly formatted hard drive to test this and see what Windows 10 is like.

I did a bit of research, but not fully. All I saw from youtube videos is that you could disable windows update that way. But it is quite deceiving to have an option that can apparently be set to Disabled only for Windows to reconfigure this back up again in exactly 1 week from time. This doesn't happen with Windows 8.1 or 7.

I checked the link and downloaded Windows Update Mini Tool and Windows Update Blocker 1.1. But I'm confused how is this any different from what I am doing manually?

Will this permanently make sure Windows Update does not reconfigure itself back to Automatic after 1 week or so? There is also another service called Windows Update Medic Service which I suspect is what's triggering to change Windows Update service back to Automatic. That service is set to manual. I cannot disable it, it will say "Access is Denied". Perhaps this is what's starting this up?

I also read about the future 1903 update. But that only states that it can turn off automatic Windows Update for up to 35 days. I would like to only manually update Windows from time to time and have it remain as disabled as it sucks memory resources and causes games to lag.

Many thanks for your detailed response. Yes, I had a look and noticed that the Windows Update Mini Tool lets you selectively choose what to update.

Something else I've noticed interestingly with the Windows Update blocker tool.
When I used Windows Update Blocker 1.1 to Disable Windows Update. I have noticed one difference. If I manually attempt to start the Windows update service then it will show up Access is denied.

When I manually click Apply Now to Enable the service via Windows Update Blocker 1.1 tool then it is being enabled successfully and I can then make those changes without this happening.

Does this actually mean that if I Disable Windows Update using the Windows Update Blocker 1.1 tool Windows will not be able to reconfigure its service back to Automatic? Seeing that Access is Denied now occurs after using the Blocker tool, I'm curious to know if this time Windows will fail to Enable Windows update back on again? If this thing does the trick, this would be great and I won't have to give up on using Windows 10!

Right. I guess, I shall wait and see, fingers crossed! I've just had success disabling Windows Update Medic Service! Using Windows Update Blocker tool after doing some research. I pasted WaaSMedicSvc=4 into the Wub notepad file.
After rerunning the tool and hitting Apply Now button, this is the result! It has managed to successfully Disable the service without being denied.

I'm going to have to observe for the next week or so to see if Windows Update will remain disabled. Hopefully this should do the trick. It should work on all versions of Windows 10.

Does this mean it is not activated yet? That may have some bearing.

Well, from my understanding I should be able to use Windows 10 for at least 30 days without activating. I don't think activating it will make any difference to Windows 10s attempt at re-configuring Windows update to auto. As this is just the architectural design of Windows 10.

Now I'm going to have to test and see what happens. If this proves to be a success then I will buy a license key! But if it fails then, well I will return back to older Windows. It will be a shame because so far I like Windows 10 except for this nuisance Windows auto update.
