Windows Updates problem installing Dell Synaptics mouse update

For the last couple of days, every time the laptop boots or reboots, Windows updates finds an update for Synaptics mouse, after clicking to install the update, the installation fails and an error is logged in Windows Event log. Today, I went to Dells webpage, and downloaded the driver Windows updates is supposed to be trying to update the touchpad mouse to, the installation of that driver went well. But even so, I still get Windows update attempting to update the mouse driver to the one the computer already has.

Perhaps all I need to do is clear Windows updates, I dont know, never done it before. Any ideas would be appreciated. I almost mess up the computer yesterday, doing things I should had not tried to fix this glitch. Thanks in advance.

Thanks mrgeek, I might try the troubleshooter, and rolling back the driver (even though, neither driver, old or new are giving me problems). I ll do this things tomorrow, and come back later.

Hi, given the error code, manually installing, as you've done, is a good approach, as is hiding it as MrGeek says.
How to fix Windows Update error 80070103 Pureinfotech
The error simply means that you may be trying to install a device driver that is already installed in your computer. It can also mean that Windows Update is trying to install a device driver that has a lower compatibility rating that the one is already on your PC — meaning that the driver on your computer is better.

Hi Dalchina, I did the reset, unfortunately it didnt fix the glitch of Windows updates finding the mouse driver update. But thanks, I appreciate the suggestion.

This is what I ended up doing. I didn't really wanted to roll back the driver, as both drivers, old and new are working well. And WU was finding the update with either driver, so I decided to use the Show Hide tool, it worked. Now, the mouse update is not showing up anymore when I click check for updates.

Hi Bo, Thanks for the suggestion, about show/hide. It worked for me too, after reading MANY other people's ideas, and trying some. Just want to point out: maybe when it does an automatic update check, it bypasses the synaptics mouse (an automatic one hasn't run yet), but when I click on check for updates, it appears to actually find and actually install again. But that's ok...no harm done I guess. I'm looking forward to looking tomorrow or some day soon, and find that the automatic update check has run and did NOT display this darn synaptics thing again.
For anybody else interested, I had a little trouble finding the "show/hide" tool. It's name is wushowhide.diagcab. I guess you could google it, or search for it on some windows website. Good luck!

    Covered here:
Hide or Show Windows Updates in Windows 10

Also could be achieved using the free WUMT (sledgehammer) tool as one of its features.

Steve, great to know the show/hide tool has helped you also. FWIW, I started using it to hide the Synaptics mouse update while using W10 1803, and I am still having the need to use it to hide same update in W10 1903. Likely, this Synaptic update would still be an everyday annoyance if it wasn't for this fantastic little tool.
