Thank you for this. I do have a rempl folder. If I understand correctly, Microsoft keeps modifying & reissuing this update. In the link you posted, most were having trouble installing the update. On my machine, it seems to say that it installed successfully...4 times.

However, if I go to Programs & Features, it's listed only once...today. I saw in post KB4023057 Update to Windows 10 for update reliability - January 15 that someone indicated that @Brink said to uninstall it, but I couldn't find that advice by him. Would you advise uninstalling it?

Still not sure why "hidden" updates are installed though.

IIRC KB4023057 is not a regular update. It's a program and the repetitive "updates" are changes to that program. Search for KB4023057 and you'll likely find your answer also.

There are data within windows that display results that are misleading.
For example when viewing Windows updates it may display successful when it was never installed.
So for Windows updates you must check to see whether the update was or was not installed.

There is a trigger which makes it display successful or fail. This trigger is unreliable or misleading to the end user. The end user must always check to see whether the update was or was not installed.

Thanks for the information. I thought that I had checked when I looked at the installed updates. Is there another way to check?

In order to determine whether a Windows update has or has not been installed you must attempt to uninstall the update.
If there is no update to uninstall then the update was never installed.

View update history > click uninstall updates > in the right upper corner in the box that displays: search installed updates > enter the KB number > if the update does not appear then it has not been installed and if the update is able to be uninstalled the it was installed

Wow. Thanks for this. I always assumed that everything listed under Settings/Update & Security/View update history showed all the installed updates. Now I see that cumulative updates supersede previous ones & even some other updates.

This makes it difficult to roll back updates, if one causes a problem & isn't caught in time. I appreciate your time & expertise!
