No. You were only a 'seeker' for the one time you clicked 'check for updates'. Once the check had completed you were back to normal. Windows update will only automatically download the standard 'Patch Tuesday' 'B' releases from now on. You'd have to click 'check for updates' again each time you want to 'seek' for anything marked as 'optional', such as the 'C/D' updates.

OK. Thanks for putting my mind at rest. As the OP and I'll end my participation of this thread now. I hope it helps others in the same situation.

Funny. Some people worry about not getting updates.
Me? I worry about getting updates.

Because not getting = smooth sailing, whilst getting = trouble.
I like not getting for as long as possible.

I have discovered that if one turns ON the "Automatically download updates, even over metered connections" option then this allows Ms to send upgrades which would otherwise be blocked since MS will not push GBs of data over metered connections. On my laptop it was OFF but now it is ON.

I do not recall turning it OFF so maybe it has always been OFF but I do not know why. My laptop internet connection is WiFi via my router. Maybe the (well known) scandal of people exceeding their download limits when downloading Feature Updates (which cost them money) caused MS to change the default setting to OFF? All I know is that turning it ON allowed me to upgrade from v1803 to v1809 when I clicked on "Check for Updates".

You use Applications not Windows. If those are working well you are good to go.

Just click on the Check for updates button every now and again.

although this person begs to differ about 1809 as that one broke something on his machine.

while v1809 works well with newer hardware, it also breaks compatibility with some older hardware

only home & professional editions of win10 v1803 are supported up to 11/12/2019. education & enterprise editions get additional 1 year of support after support for home/pro editions end (I have v1803 education installed on my custom built PC using a gigabyte board; using Win10 education is almost like using Firefox ESR)
