2 weeks ago I pulled my Son's Acer laptop out of the closet because his mother's laptop broke down. I fired it up and it picked up the 1809 when I checked for updates. This laptop was in the closet for the last 5 months with 1803 on it. So 1809 update is indeed still coming down the pipeline.
On my desktop I have been using 1809 since it first released. Overall I am pleased with it.

    cheers

    Why not just go to:
    Download Windows 10

and click on the "Update now" button?

My Dell laptop took a long time before it was updated on a previous update about 18 months ago but it recently upgraded to v 1809 as soon as I set the defer updates to zero days. Check you haven't set defer updates since you have the Pro version.

You can try doing a manual update as suggested above. Check for driver updates from Dell before doing this and make a full backup before you upgrade.

Bree - Thank you. Reading the MS press release dated 16th January it now seems safe to click on 'Check for Updates' so I might try it, but first a question: - If I become a 'seeker' will I keep on getting the C & D 'Preview' updates as well as the B (Patch Tuesday) updates? If so then this means my laptop will be updating 3 weeks out of every 4 weeks and I will not be able to stop it even if the updates interfere with what I am doing (I have Win 10 Home edition). It could become inconvenient and frustrating.

    No, you can relax.

You are a 'seeker' only for the one time you click 'Check for updates'. It does not make a permanent change to your windows update settings. If you never click it again you'll never be bothered by the 'C/D' updates.

OK, I'll give it a go but I'll make a backup first. After I have something to report I'll post here with results. Let's hope it is positive.

I clicked on 'Check for updates' and everything went smoothly so my DELL is now on v1809 and, up to now, there have been no problems. Initial upgrade took 1h 11m and then subsequent Cumulative updates were installed so v1809 is now 'up to date'. The 'Disk cleanup' tool finds 29.2GB of data that could be deleted. 26.0GB of this is "Previous Windows Installation" files, 2.0GB is "Windows update" files and 878MB is "Delivery Optimization" files. Everything looks as if it is working fine so, after a couple of weeks, will it be safe to delete this 29.2GB? I have plenty of 'Free' disk space but it is a lot of space and have taken a backup image. I do like to keep a 'clean' disk if possible.

Good news on your move to 1809.

After ten days you can no longer go back to 1803 with standard Windows Recovery so you should be able to delete the the old with confidence.

I would really look into a tool like Macrium Reflect. I use it and I think most of the people who have responded on this thread use it. A reliable way to restore you system to the point in time of the backup. I keep several version.

    Great news, well done!

After 10 days Windows should automatically delete the "Previous Windows Installation" files for you when the time it allows you to roll back expires. But if you are happy that 1809 is working for you and want to delete it earlier, then use Disk Clean up to do so.

Thanks everyone. Caledon Ken - Yes I also use Macrium Reflect. I have used it for 7 years now and found it easy to use and effective (I've had to use the restore a couple of times).

One final question: - Now that I have clicked on 'Check for updates' will MS now see me as a 'seeker' or 'early adopter' when each new version comes out and push the upgrade onto my machine? If so then I will be 'in the front line' to get the flack if it is a 'buggy' release.
