Recent Windows 10 Update trashed my computer

    I am pissed!
yesterday(feb 23, 2019) my Win10 Home system began an update on it's own. OK So I let it go. Iwas working on my Win7 system while this was updating. Some time later I glanced over at it's progress and saw something I had never seen before. It said that the update failed and it was rolling back the changes. I thought to myself, this must be because I did not have internet access at the time. So after it rolled back and restarted into windows I performed a normal shut down and planned to retry in the morning.
This morning I began the update, this time with internet functional. It seemed to be doing it's thing. 6, 7, 8+ hours later it was still spinning its wheels, supposedly updating. This is wrong. Something must be messed up here.
Finally I had to shut it down, the not so friendly way.
Upon restart the computer goes into the bios and then proceeds(I assume) to start windows....but it just shuts down. WHAT!

    Yeah, Now what??

If you can’t boot into Windows 10 to perform a Refresh or Restore, you need to use the original installation DVD or USB key:
    1. Insert the disc and restart your computer
    2. At the Windows Setup screen, click Next
    3. Click Repair your computer or press R
If you don’t have the installation media, you can try the following (note that these methods can work on some computer models, not all computers with Windows 10):
    • Press F11 as your computer boots
    • Press F8 or Shift + F8 as your computer boots
    • Try the other F keys too as the computer boots

Yes, I managed to get it back to pre-update state. But this has been the second time it completely failed. Now after it downloaded the update again, it is waiting to restart to update again. I set the "do not update hours" so it would not, but when I went to shut down it is attempting to update a third time. Lets see what happens this time. Update start time...8:00PM

    Waiting....................

--- How were you able to accomplish that?

--- This is your 3rd attempt.
Let's hope it doesn't fail again but if it does, what version of Win10 are you using?
--- I have 3 Win10 computers and all 3 of them upgraded to Feature update 1809 from 1803 (OS Build 17134.619) yesterday Saturday Feb 23.
--- Are you trying to update to Feature update 1809?

When you either get back to your pre-update state or successfully install whatever is coming through, do not shut down.
--- Let the tablet stay on all night if you have to in case WU's need to get updated.
--- The idea is either way, make sure the tablet is running ok in either circumstance.
--- Do not use battery power.

On 2 of my Win10 x64 computers, Free up space now has Previous window installation(s) of 24.6 GB & 39.7 GB.

Can your SSD(?) have enough space to handle that?

BTW, do you use system image backups?

Getting the system back to pre-update state? An additional restart the next day booted up OK. The update was still there to install and continued to fail to install. The windows 10 version was 1803 and I was confused as to why it hadn't gone to 1809 some time ago as my other systems already did. I am saving all data and will be downloading the latest version from Microsoft to reinstall. There really insn't much on the computer at present and do not want to fiddle around with issues.

I don't use Microsoft's restore points or their backup regime. I use Macrium Reflect to create a base install and later some incremental backups. I hadn't made a backup for this computer yet.

--- Saving all your data is great.
--- Since you've had a couple of failures to update to 1809, consider leaving your computer on 1803 and let the computer update to 1809 when it's ready to do so.
--- I've seen what you are seeing often where I volunteer.
--- My 3 Windows 10 computers that are about 10 years old, just updated naturally last week on their own.

Please do create a current Macrium Reflect system image backup on this computer.
