I'm on version 1803 for some reason, isn't that like over a year ago? Why hasn't it updated via autoupdates? I want to try the new clipboard feature.
I know it sounds like a dumb question but I'm kinda curious why. I did a clean install a few months ago and always update when I get the updates.
According to MS:
“We are taking a more measured approach with the October Update, slowing our rollout to more carefully study device health data. We will offer the October Update to users via Windows Update when data shows your device is ready and you will have a great experience,” John Cable, Director of Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery, explains.
“If we detect that your device may have an issue, such as an application incompatibility, we will not install the update until that issue is resolved.”
Backup or image first.As usual, disconnect all usb devices except keyboard and mouse, disable antivirus.Go here https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...oad/windows10/ and click 'Update now' button at top. If your device is compatible, you should get 1809. Or .. you can wait another 2 months and get 1903, using the same process. Good Luck
I wouldn't worry to much, even though my laptop has the upgrade my desktop only got it today. After turning it on this morning got a banner across the middle of the screen telling me it was available with the choices to pick a time, tell me later or restart now. I told it to restart so now my desktop is at version 1809.
There are now only hubby's desktop and laptop to get it, oh yes and my other laptop, I'll have to turn it on and see if it's ready yet.
I seem to recall reading somewhere the 1809 update depends on some system stuff. I have a really old machine in my household that has not yet updated either, I think it may never. In any case I normally just do a clean install with the desired ISO, but the machine stuck on 1803 in my house is a family member's and I don't work on it unless I have to. Will be interesting to see if it ever updates.
Manually upgrading or clean installing overrides any protective restriction MS has put in place. You can see some of those in the table in the thread near the top of the News section on re-release of 1809.
Inevitably it will become the case where even machines originally released with Win 10 will no longer be upgradable... it will be interesting to see how MS copes with that.
Yes it will. My family member's machine is seriously old, like ten years. What's going to happen when it can no longer update? Will be time for a new machine I imagine, not looking forward to that because I'll get roped into setting up the new one.
Think piles of old PCs being dissembled by a 10 year old kid in Africa or India. The environment? Who cares- we need the latest intel processor and graphics to play Call of Duty 2025. Sorry, I'm far too cynical these days. Melting glaciers and insect extinction are just fine- really.
More pragmatically- I have a laptop - unused- that came with Vista, I upgraded it to Win 8, but it got hot- in Safe Mode. Low level driver problems. Sure, could still run Vista, but which modern programs would not run on it? Security? It would probably still manage browsing, email, office programs.
The real problems arise when people follow the Win 10 upgrade path relentlessly.
a. Earlier edition Windows -> Win 10 - perhaps the manufacturer doesn't provide drivers for Win 10. No guarantees. Some have experienced obscurer issues with low level drivers. Clearly that's a risk, but one which most ignore.
b. Came with Win 10 originally- keep upgrading each 6 months - until there's a problem. Much harder to anticipate.
It's due to the phased roll out. My laptop updated to v 1809 as soon as set the defer period to zero days. I just tried to update a 2006 PC from v 1709 and it went to v 1803 instead of v 1809 due to the phased roll out. I'd be in no hurry to upgrade until MS deems the software is ready for your PC. Be sure to have system backup if you force the upgrade.
