    Just a little useless info:

Besides the fact Windows Update is auto-configured and can only be tamed through firewall ...

I have a Dell notebook, Win 10 64-bit on i5 with 4GB RAM provided by my employer, yet each time they decide to do an update it freezes.. reason being, allocated 2GB integrated GPU RAM, which means it only has 2GB to process heavy (64-bit files) RAM disk operations...(the system partition seems only for reboot purposes?)

    Something else strange.

If I create a new folder on my desktop then name it I don’t see the name right away there is a delay unless I right click and refresh.

    Anyone ever seen this?

That's most likely an 1809 bug which some experience- reported widely and several places here. Said to be fixed in an Insider build.

Is all your RAM identical, and is your BIOS up to date?

Have you tried a clean boot and safe mode as I suggested?

Using Win 10 Pro 1809, if i go into services, windows update, properties, startup type set to disabled. It seems to re-enable itself later on if not after a reboot.

How does one stop it? I have reason to believe it is hard locking up my PC. it's listed in the error log around the time my PC is locking up.

    Thanks for the help.
note that disabling just the windows update service in services.msc alone is only a temporary solution and will re-enable it later on as time passes by. that's because there are hidden tasks in Task Scheduler (taskschd.msc) relating to windows update that are running or scheduled to run and these tasks will re-enable WU if that service has been disabled.

only with 3rd party tools like StopUpdates10, windows update blocker (WUB) and windows update minitool (WUMT) can accomplish this (by not only stopping the windows update service but also disabling the scheduled tasks related to WU) and can also re-enable WU and their tasks when needed

I don't use win10 w/out using any one of those programs
