Need Suggestions for a failed 1809 update

I have an old Dell laptop running 1803 fine. It decided to do the 1809 update today. It did it's thing for quite some time (downloading and such). It displayed some results of checking and indicated everything was OK. When it rebooted, I think it had the normal progress going in the shutdown but got stuck on the reboot. Been sitting that way for maybe 8 hours now. I never saw any sign of disk activity on the reboot although I certainly might have missed that.

So I'm looking for suggestions on what to do now. I do have an image backup from a couple days ago if need be.

I've seen references to trying to upgrade from an iso but it's not clear to me whether that is some update iso or the install iso.

Finally, I think I have configure automatic updates to a '2'. If 1803 is to be this laptop's last hurrah, how can I make sure it doesn't try to update?

This is a Dell D820 running 10 pro x32 (won't run x64). Got to 10 by doing an upgrade about six months ago over win7 pro to activate it, then did a clean 10 pro install. As far as drivers, the only drivers are those from the install or update.

Hi, please note the caveats here - though as you received this by Windows Update, hopefully they won't apply!
    Windows 10 October 2018 Update version 1809 Now Re-Released - Windows 10 Forums

I.e. the update is not compatible with some PCs/some PC configurations. As time goes by, this is an inevitable outcome. Whether that is what is troubling your PC is, of course, an entirely different matter.

Is your PC approved for Win 10 by Dell? Most manufacturers produce a list. That said, many people naturally take the risk and upgrade anyway.

Drivers are another factor in terms of compatibility. The drivers from the lowest level up may be different from one build to another. This too can cause problems.

All that said, the above may have nothing to do with your problem, which could be anything from lack of disk space, a disk or file system problem, an incompatible program, partition configuration problems.... many possible causes.

Great that you have disk images.

Now, recently people have experienced problems with Windows update, varying from region to region and ISP to ISP. Normally during such an upgrade, besides the delivery of the basic build, there will be one or more subsequent and probably large updates to apply. It's possible this is affecting you - the long delay. But just a possibility.

You have two possibilities- wait longer (8 hours is long already) - or intervene. If you intervene, unless you are extremely lucky, you would end up having to restore your image.

So considering your 1803: To stay on 1803 there are two things that can help:
    a. Temporarily- as you have Pro- you can defer upgrades for up to 365 days.
    b. Long term - block all Windows Updates - see
Stop Windows 10 Updates Properly and Completely Solved - Windows 10 Forums

You can then use a 3rd party tool such as
    Windows Update Minitool
    or the newer & similar
    Windows update manager
both free- scan for updates, which you can optionally apply using checkboxes.

Thus you can get other updates if you wish.

    Manual upgrade:
    - download 1809 iso
    - rt click, MOUNT it
    - run setup.exe from the newly created drive letter

Certainly might be time is up for this laptop. It's not on the Dell list which doesn't surprise me. The last time Dell put out drivers for this, it was for Vista. But it's been humming along nicely with the default MS drivers. The only issue has been I can't get the 1900x1200 video any more.

I did finally kill it, Didn't have to press and hold the power button. Just a quick press and it should down. Seems to have booted back fine and says it's on 1803. I'll probably make another system image. Not much to lose from my image a couple days ago except for some setup stuff. I use this laptop for volunteer work doing seniors & low income tax returns. We just met to hook up to the site's printers and network and such so no big deal if I do lose the current system.

I'll take a look at the article and those third party tools regardless of whether I get 1809 up or not. Seems like a good thing to have. The forced updates are one of the reasons I restored my main laptop back to 8.1 back in the free update to 10 period. But if I can control the updating, I may try it on the main laptop again. I use classic shell anyway so the win10 menu doesn't annoy me.

One last question. To be clear, I can do an update from an existing (1803 in this case) os to the new (1809) using the installation iso (or in my case a flash drive, I assume they are the same). Not a re-install but an update leaving installed programs etc there? I wasn't aware that you could do that.

    thanks again for your help

Quick answer to the last part. Easiest way is to use the Update assistant from this link, or make ISO from second part of the link, mount it, and run Setup.exe. No flash needed, that would be if you were going to clean install.

    Download Windows 10

The key to doing an upgrade rather than a clean install is to make sure you
    a. boot up and log in

    b. then
run setup.exe - whether that be from a mounted iso file or a bootable installation medium. Now
    - if your iso is the SAME BUILD as your installed OS - that's a repair install taking the build backwards.
    - if your iso is a LATER BUILD than your installed OS - that's an upgrade install taking the build number upwards.

    Whereas

If you boot from installation medium and proceed, you do a clean install.

using the installation iso (or in my case a flash drive, I assume they are the same).
    - make sure it is the latest 1809 - the iso build was recently updated.

    thanks.

took me a couple clicks to see this. I am using an 8.1 laptop. The update top part doesn't show up. Only the install part (which I'm familiar with). Something tickled the brain and I popped over to an existing 10 machine and followed the link. Then you get the update part followed by the install below it.

Well none of the various attempts to update have worked. They all follow the same pattern of spending a fair amount of time before the first reboot. Not sure if all, but at least some, show a message before the reboot indicating that stuff is OK. Looks like the system hangs before it even tries to do anything on reboot. There's not really any disk activity.

So I'm going to try the some of the options in @dalchina's post for limiting updates until mid-April when I'll finish with volunteer tax work. Then I'll try a clean install of either 1809 or more likely the April release. If none of that works, i'll try donating the thing somewhere either with 1803 or maybe restore back to win7.

Thanks for the help and if anything interesting happens, like the April release actually install, I'll post an update

Guess I should have mentioned that I did do that. I just reran it for this post. I'm not sure which update attempt this was (e.g. had I disconnected my wireless usb mouse? was AV disabled?).

The summary and console are below. I took those results to indicate setupdiag didn't find anything. But I didn't realize it had generated that zip although I'm not sure how to read that.
