A question on the driver version. NVidia's driver check on their site indicates I have the most recent driver (post #41 ) but your post is suggesting a presumably more recent volume at 9.x. Mine is 7.x
well I don't completely trust Nvidia's driver scan

Edit 3/29: It looks like your Geforce Go 7400 / nvidia NVS 120m hardware is using hardware ID beginning with "PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_01D8". I found the ID "PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_01D8&SUBSYS_01CC1028" listed in the R224635.exe package from Dell, which has v7.15.11.7968 (32bit) of the video driver dated 3/11/2009 (listed for a Latitude D630 laptop but should work on the D820). That version is also found in the R224649.exe package, which is the 64bit equivalent of the graphics driver should you run a 64bit version of Vista/Win7/Win8/Win10.

Update your nvidia display driver from Dell to v7.15.11.7968 as soon as possible

btw, the v9.18.13.0908 nvidia graphics driver (v309.08 - release date 2015.2.24) that I'm using shows up only when I select either Geforce 6 or Geforce 7 series on the Nvidia drivers site. seems like the v9.x graphics drivers will not work with your Geforce Go 7400 graphics hardware on your Dell D820 laptop because HWID "PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_01D8" is not included.

Did that video upgrade and it worked. Not really seeing much of a difference. I still get an occasional BSOD. I'll be trying the May(?) update whenever it appears. But probably will give in if it doesn't want to upgrade and send this laptop back to 7 or linux-land of something. For next tax season, probably go with my 5 year old HP running 8.1.

well spokey, Microsoft has just made the 1903 version publicly available Tuesday May 21, so you could try upgrading to that one manually (you may not see the 1903 version right away)

Dell had some problems in the past with certain laptop models with onboard nvidia graphics chips and there was a lawsuit about it here. maybe the occasional BSODs you are getting are caused by the hardware (faulty nvidia chip possibly)

maybe get another Dell laptop that does not use laptop-based nvidia graphics (my mom's old Dell Inspiron e1405 uses onboard Mobile Intel 945 graphics and I don't get any BSODs at all)

    thanks

i've been looking every couple days. I'll look for it next week. Heading for Denver (youngest went there a few years back) for the weekend.

I've got another laptop I can use for the tax stuff. Typing right now on an HP running 8.1 (although I don't particularly like this machine, but we all make mistakes). Might use that, or I've got another Dell (D630) that hasn't had a problem. Only problem there is my wife also does volunteer tax prep so we'd have to share / not schedule to work at the same time.

I was trying to keep this one going as it actually runs pretty well, but the IRS/VITA/TCE tax people won't allow 7 anymore and I could upgrade to win10 for free rather than buy an upgrade for win8.1.

So, I figure I'll give it one more shot with 1903. If that works, great. I'll be good for next tax season (assuming they allow 1903 until its end of life). If not, I'll probably revert it back to win7 and see if my son-in-law wants it. He doesn't do much, but they're always breaking their machines.

Want to extend a thanks to you and zbook for all the help and time.

    no probs, spokey.

there were also some Dell Latitude D820s that use integrated mobile Intel 945 graphics chipsets (motherboard is Dell part no. FF096) rather than the integrated nVidia Quadro NVS 120m graphics, which this kind of nvidia hardware was prone to overheating problems, unexpected failures and cause random BSODs, hence nVidia got their butts sued for it about a decade ago (related CNet.com article on that). seems like the updated drivers & updated Dell BIOSes only mitigated the problem somewhat.

hopefully that other Dell laptop (Latitude D630) of yours is not using nvidia graphics but Intel graphics chipset

Well the D820 dies faster. That's the good news. Doesn't get anywhere near the long part followed by a reboot. Just stops with a cryptic dialog saying it can't update.

The D630 does have an nvidia (135M I think it was). Got that updated. I had created a usb and ran in to the USB problem so I had to copy the usb to the HD to get it work. Just copied without trying the USB on my wife's other laptop (Toshiba satellite 2016(?)). The thing I've noticed on that is that the update reset a bunch of settings. So far I found it set the power button to sleep or hibernate when I had set it to power off. Also reverted back to requiring a password to wake up from screen off (got to go back and figure out how I had fixed that one). I haven't seen anything like that on the D630, but maybe the diff is the Toshiba is a home version.

given MS seems to have some problems I might try the D820 again as I'm not really using it right now, but I suspect it's heading towards the great laptop in the sky (probably revert back to win7 and find a nice home).

you might wanna put Win7 on there long-term (or either the older Win10 LTSB 2015 or LTSB 2016 version) as I think the v1709 & higher versions of Win10 push nvidia video graphics harder/faster and increases the chances of BSODs with that old hardware. check out these topics posted in these sites:
