    Still having issues here in the UK. It's not only the updates on Windows 10 for the PC but many people cannot log on to their Xbox Consoles, cannot download or install their apps and games.This goes for me too, my Xbox refuses to download a game and Windows Update on my PC will not connect to the Servers either.

    I'm on BT Broadband by the way. Internet works fine for everything else.

    Agreed. As a 'fix' using that Global DNS resolves the issue until other DNS servers catch up.

    As of 08.00 2nd February - BT DNS server still has the issue.

    Mystified and @Runnerbean,

    My BT has been working fine for days now. Two things you could try...

    Restart your router. BT will usually assign your a new IP address, most likely you will end up using a different BT DNS server.

    Restart your PC (use Restart, not Shut down). Sometimes a full boot up from cold is all that's needed.

    Thanks.
    Router was restarted at 10.03 yesterday 1 Feb.
    PCs in use are restarted every morning / day.
    Update and NSLookup of MS update server via BT DNS remains off line at this time.
    PC set to Global DNS address (8.8.8.8) working fine.

    Thanks again for the suggestion.

    I'm sure it will clear sooner or later

    Still not working for me on BT. Like I said above, it's not only PC Users having these issues but Xbox owners too up and down the country and in other parts of the world caused by an outage of some kind according to the Down Detector website.

    By the way, when you change the DNS on a PC, will that allow my other PC and Xbox to update too or do you have to change the DNS on each Hardware item? Can the DNS even be changed on an Xbox?

    @Bree. Thanks, I'll try restarting my Router first and see how it goes.

    Just tried changing my DNS as suggested above and it doesn't work. Even though the internet still works for browsing I still cannot connect to Windows Update! it tries and fails and just says 'Retry'.

    I used the Google Public DNS 8.8.8.8 with the alternative Server 8.8.4.4.

    Maybe it's not BT after all.

    I changed (TCP/IPv4), I take it we don't touch (TCP/IPv6)?

    As at 09.38 3 February.

    IPv4 Correct.
    Seeing your post I just tried switching between Global and BT DNS servers again.
    Using the Google Public DNS works perfectly.
    Using BT DNS fails. So definitely something awry with BT.
    Tried to force my BT Hub to select an alternative BT DNS but on every restart it returns to the same servers:
    Primary: 81.139.57.100
    Secondary: 81.139.56.100
    (Note my IP address is changing as would be expected)
    Might be worth checking your PC again to make sure it retained the server IPs you gave it.
    From a command prompt use ipconfig /all then look for DNS Servers in the returned info.

    @Mystified.

    It didn't work for me on IPv4 but it did work eventually on IPv6. I believe there is an error in the tutorial regards the IPv6 numbers, well not the numbers but the dots. It should be entered as:,..

    • 2001:4860:4860::8888 Primary
    • 2001:4860:4860::8844 Secondary

    There is an extra set of dots between the last 4860 and 8844.

    So with IPv4 on Automatic DNS and IPv6 as entered above, I finally got my PC to connect and pull down the updates.
