Well, if the iso is that old it can't be 1809... and I believe the iso for 1809 was updated after release, So I suggest you get yourself the latest 1809, create or update your disk image set for your laptop (e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) just in case, then do the in-place repair.

If you're trying with the wrong iso you may get that message. Do get yourself a new one.

You also get such a message if certain registry tweaks have been done to change major paths.

Don't take MS messages too literally. Sadly people are generally very poor at design when it comes to error messages.

OK. Duh. Yes I downloaded the latest iso called mediacreationtool1809 and it is now getting updates and telling me I can keep everything whew almost there.

For the attempted .Net repairs. When I renamed the files did this do anything major or just put the .old files somewhere where they'll eventually be automatically deleted and new folders were created when I restarted the services?

Edit: ^Why did I just ask this I can go to the directory and check duh. And I guess it is safe to delete the .old files.
Edit2: CCleaner has now twice stuck Avast on my pc while upgrading/installing it and I know I'm unchecking all boxes and wasn't even offered Avast from them.

It didn't work I'm sitting there staring at the wheel for 45 minutes during the upgrade have no clue how it's still giving me the "we couldn't connect to update service" error. Whatever, I wish it had needed a clean install more than it did but I guess it does now. Thank you for your help and tips. I'd of much rather saved the hrs spent on a clean install.

Hello, first, as you've downloaded the iso, there was an option NOT to receive updates as part of the installation. I believe I suggested not doing so.

Second, it does take time. Best go and research a holiday, phone a friend, cook a meal, read a book.

Third, as with any major change, things can go wrong.

Clean install? It's not a clean install. I hope you logged in, mounted the iso, ran setup.exe.

If you booted from a boot disk, you're doing a clean install not an in-place upgrade repair.

I've been having this issue as well. Pretty sure it's an issue on Microsofts end. I used the media creation tool twice and did a clean reinstall twice. Same result both times, with the update service failing to connect during the install or afterwards. Installing the drivers made no difference. I suppose it's best to try again later on, and hope it's working then.

Yes, I ran the .iso from Windows setup.exe that did not work. Just got done with clean install (twice also!) and see that @Scitenik here is having the same issue I was crawling the web seeing if people were having this so as not to jump the gun with the clean install. So now am at 1511 10586.164 and "update service can't connect yada yada." Same place, just without the apps and settings woohoo! I'm thinking I should have read a book or cooked a meal.

How can you have a 1511 build if you've used an 1809 iso?

Note that a few reports indicating problems with accessing MS update servers have been received.
