WUA forces the latest upgrade/update and does the same as the other. Personally I would always make a backup of the system before any upgrade, in case you have to rollback. The .old folder is only available for 30 days, whereas a backup lasts forever.
Microsoft changed the time period for retaining windows old to ten days.
The number of days can be adjusted manually.

I also dont get the 1809 update even when doing a manual scan for updates on a dell xps 13 9370 that was bought last year and also another pc. Two other pcs already got the update even a super old core2duo laptop. So i dont really know how microsoft decides which pcs gets the update. I checked the list with blocked hard/software but dont have anything from that list. The only thing annoying about this is, that i always do a manual backup before big updates and i cant if i dont know when it will arrive. The whole update thing should be a bit more informative to the user so he knows why he doest get the update. I will wait till mid of february and then see if anything happened.

Windows 10 October 2018 Update version 1809 Now Re-Released - Windows 10 Forums
The News section has a thread per update per build and each new build with download links.
The usual pattern for previous new build releases is that it takes 2-3 months for most to have received it. Quite apart from the above, MA has an 'AI' approach to the order of delivery, and after the problems this time is apparently being very cautious as I said above. That said, they thoroughly messed up the last two for other reasons.
Purely for interest:

You can always try doing this manually, my preference in any case. But as always, take due precautions before any major change and create an appropriate disk image (e.g. using Macrium reflect (free) to save the tears and cries for technical support (us probably!).
"I may try the Windows Update Assistant in another month or so if WU doesn't push out the 1809 update."
If you're going to wait that long, you might as well wait until April when the next Feature Update, 1903 (?) comes out. It has gone thru much more extensive Insider testing than 1809, so hopefully won't have the number of problem issues that came with the current one, initially.
I have considered waiting for 1903 (?) to come out if I don't receive 1809 via WU rather than using the Update Assistant. Not particularly anxious to get 1809 but just wanted to confirm that other users still haven't received the update yet. All the posts to my thread have been very helpful and I thank everyone for the replies.

I have also not received 1809, but then again I also changed the settings in Windows Update to Semi-Annual Channel.
I am in no hurry to get untested/buggy or whatever you want to call it feature updates if it will cause system instability.
As it is I am not entirely happy with certain aspects of 1803 but at least it is stable for the most part on my laptop.
1809 has been better tested then previous editions. The next version 1903 (March of 2019), is introducing all new features and that is the one you want to wait on. Always make a backup and never keep valuable data on your hard drive. Sometime in the Spring, could mean that Microsoft could delay it, since it also is supposed to introduce the Chromium based Edge. Intel systems seem to have more issues than AMD. Same as NVIDIA GPU's also tend to have major issues when Microsoft makes changes to DirectX.
