Do I have to accept the update to Win10 1809?

I installed Win10 64 Home on a new computer, and all of the updates have been done, and I finally have it set up like I want it, and yesterday Windows downloaded and installed this new version that came out in November, called 1809. Every privacy invasion is back. My start menus is all different. They are trying to treat a desktop PC like a phone or Surface Pro. I don't want those. I want my desktop PC like I had it set up. What gives them the right to just change it? It used to be when you buy something from someone, you owned it. Now, they act like they still own it, and want you to continue to pay for subscriptions to use a product you already paid for.

I had a system image that was made after I got everything set up like I wanted it. I used it today, to go back to before this 1809. However, they keep wanting to reinstall it.

Is there way to opt out? Do I have to accept software on a computer that I own, that I don't want?

You do know that we are just three months away from the expected release of version 1903?

If you had Pro you could defer a Features Update (aka an upgrade to next version) for up to 365 days. However, you say you have Home. You could use wushowhide.diagcab to hide the update to 1809.

However, I'm surprised your start menu looks different. Start did look different in the very early versions, but hasn't really changed since 1607. Which version did you install? I upgraded from 1803 to 1809 and am hard pressed to see any difference. My privacy choices were respected too.

I can't say what it looked like, because I keep saying "ask me later" when it wants to re-start. I had it on there for 5 min before I did the return via the system image. If I get it anyway, I will post a picture with those start menu items that I had previously deleted. Freakers are so persistent! Basically, it's like a complete new install. Have to choose a password again, and go through their invasive set up progression again. I'm not interested in Cortana. I'm not interested in reporting to them everything I do. I'm not interested in 90% of the crap they want to add.

Not since 1607..geez, the Pilgrims hadn't even landed at Plymouth Rock.

If it comes back unasked, don't restore a system image. Instead go back via "Settings > Update & security > Recovery > Go back to previous version of Windows 10". As I understand it, this may well put a delay on you getting it again, for how long I can't say.

That is good to know, thank you. I will do that. I saw that, but thought it meant to go back to Windows 7. At the release of the free upgrade from Win7 to Win10, I learned that Win 10 was basically a free overlay on Win 7. I burned the free Win 10 to a disk, nuked my hard drive to nothing, and then re-installed Win 10 from the disk. I kept it a month and couldn't stand it. With the new PC that I had built without an OS, I figured it was time to upgrade from Win 7 as it was getting aged. Plus everybody says Win 10 makes a new super fast CPU work way better. For me, an end-user who knows nothing, I never knew that each version of Windows had new versions with the same name. I just figured Win 7 was one version and Win 10 another.

There is a link to stop Windows updates:

Stop Windows 10 Updates Properly and Completely Solved - Windows 10 Forums

There are many threads in which people wanted to upgrade and could not upgrade.
In these threads you can use the additional items that had interfered with windows upgrades.
They may prevent upgrades but do not block the attempt to upgrade.

    a) use non-Microsoft drive encryption
    b) use non-Microsoft antivirus
    c) use non-Microsoft firewall
    d) use a non-Microsoft verified driver
    e) create insufficient free space on the windows drive so that is less than 15 GB
    f) create insufficient free space in the system reserved partition
    g) create a user that has registry problems
    etc.

I had no such issue. Everything remained the same.

You may own the hardware but you do not own Windows. When you agree to install Windows you agreed to accept updates.

Is there way to opt out?
You may follow several "guides" to disable updates at the cost of not reciving security fixes and every version eg. 1803 etc. will no longer get support at all when it goes EOL.

There is no privacy or invasion being done by Microsoft. If you wish to see all of the telemetry, you can use The Diagnostic Data tool. Get Diagnostic Data Viewer - Microsoft Store There is zero private user information uploaded to MS. You can disable the telemetry using the Ultimate Windows Tweaker tool or go through privacy in settings and the other areas to disable telemetry. Only information that gets sent to MS is hardware, what legally licensed software is installed.

You own the hardware not the software. You are licensed to use that software until the author revokes that permission.
