consider how many times the defender definitions are updated each day and ask if it's either to have a new KB for every definition update or just easier to have the update say "Definition Update for Windows Defender Antivirus - KB2267602 (Definition whatever definition number it is)".

So the idea of KB4023057 being used for November/December/January updates isn't some sort of unprecedented or concerning thing here.

Well the kb 4023057 must be a superceding update. Regarding the defender updates, if they are new definitions with the same version numbers thats a joke and MS should be ashamed of themselves.

Ok my mistake. I see. SO the KB version number is the version of the program itself. But the definitions do indeed have new version numbers. TY.

Does not work for me.

3 PC's. All have beginning January, the 2018-12 Update KB4023057 successfully installed.
Repeatedly at present: the 2018-11 (sic) Update KB4023057 failed to install.
The successfully installed Update does not show itself in Programmes and Features and therefore cannot be uninstalled.
I had to perform a System Recovery with a date early in January to solve the problem for 2 PC's.
For the 3rd PC I had to image the C:\\ with an old Macrium image.

You also could have just waited for Microsoft to fix it. There really was no urgency.

I looked at a computer with this update failed 3 times and not in Progs & Features, like yours. When Troubleshoot WU failed, I reset WU components ( Reset Windows Update in Windows 10 ), deleted Software Distribution folder contents, reboot and hit Settings/Update & Security/Check for updates and all installed incl last CumUpdate which also couldn't install before.

Resetting Windows Update and deleting Software Distribution Folder did not work for me. After updating still this update failed and the error message showed up..
This demonstrates how important it is to have a (Macrium) System Image available.
