How to remove unwanted OEM Windows driver or app updates

This became worse and worse over the last 1-2 years. MS did more and more to remove the possibility for users to remove driver updates or Apps which are pushed through Windows Update for devices, especially for laptops. This then includes tons of unwanted Software, Touchpad, Sound, OEM apps, ect. Or just Intel iGPU or Nvidia GPU drivers, which are old OEM builds for example by Dell. This then includes services and UWP apps too.

In the beginning, you could easily disable driver updates through control panel system. This doesnt work anymore since over a year now. I am not sure if this is a bug, or MS secretly deactivated the functionality.

Then they also removed the specific driver and OEM app updates from the Update list, most updates are not listed anymore in the installed update list, you cant remove them anymore after Windows installed them.

wushowhide.diagcab doesnt work too anymore 100%. Most driver updates you flag with them are ignored and Windows still installs them. Most OEM app updates are not even listed to hide.

I had so many issues over the past months on my Dell XPS laptop, because of Windows just pushes and forces broken drivers or apps through Windows Update, and then even ROLLS back drivers. I have literally no control anymore over my PCs.

    Here is an example:

These forced OEM app updates are not listed in the Updates to remove list. These driver updates are forced through even you deactivated the functionality in several ways. That yellow flagged Intel Media SDK, for example, is broken since weeks and Windows tries to install it everyday and fails.

How do I remove for example the unwanted OEM app "Waves - SoftwareComponent - 5/15/2018 12:00:00 AM" which runs as a service in the background all the time I dont want. Same as "9NB9SRTL2KPT-WavesAudio.WavesMaxxAudioProforDell".

This is just unbelievable. There has to be a way to deactivate this out of control nonsense. And also remove the already installed updates.

Doesnt work like I said. It is basically the same as wushowhide.diagcab with a GUI. It worked maybe 2 years ago, but MS changed how this works, most drivers are flaged as nonflaggable, OEM apps are not hidable.

You cant hide or remove these driver or OEM App updates.

Is there really no way to set Windows updates to manual and then select manually what to install? Or force a group policy to just install Updates by MS (feature and security updates), NO driver updates, NO OEM apps.

    OEM apps can't be uninstalled?

Sorry about your drivers. That tool is all that comes to mind now.

I would certainly perform clean install in your place. Hate OEM apps myself..

... you dont understand the problem. Anyone, please? These OEM apps are PUSHED THROUGH WINDOWS UPDATES for specific device IDs, for example specific laptops. And cant be removed in a classical way. Example:

They are handled by Windows like drivers and cant be removed.

There is no way to remove or deactivate these types of updates.

Some users managed to stop driver updates with the help of this tutorials (combined with metered connection) - see last page of comments

@AndreTen Doesnt work (anymore), like I said. Most guides on this site are obsolete, broken or incomplete and not working anymore since 1-2 years because of ongoing changes in Windows 10.

And how would I do that? How can I just let security updates and feature updates enabled and disable EVERYTHING else? I did this with group policy but it doesnt work.

    1. Go to Run –> gpedit.msc
    2. In the Group Policy Editor, go to Computer Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> System –> Device Installation –> Device Installation Restrictions
    3. In the right hand pane, select “Prevent installation of devices not described by other policy settings” and set it to Enabled.

This doesnt prevent the download, no? This doesnt prevent OEM apps.

And also how would you remove already pushed driver and especially App updates which were installed through Windows Update.

Sorry to hear that @gorgor. Did you try at Dell's forum, or support?

Well I never tried to stop OEM apps from being updated via gpedit, but It still does a good job for me (Last 2 years), on stopping Driver updates. I haven't had one since.
