KB4471324 fails to install and several problems

Hello everyone. I hope someone can help me with this.

The first time the update tried to install, when I restarted the PC, it said it was a scanning and repairing my C drive. It took a really long time (not sure if the process actually finished) and then I got a black screen with this message: "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected device and press a key".

I restarted the PC and tried installing the update manually via Windows Update Catalog but same result as before: it failed to install with error 0x800736b3.

I tried again disabling all non-Microsoft services but the same black screen appeared again.

I also noticed a couple of problems. The Mail app closes itself after a few seconds, without letting me see any emails. Resetting it via Apps and features didn't work. Also when I open Event Viewer it says "MMC could not create the snap-in". I searched google and found out that deleting a registry key and restarting the PC would fix that problem. I did it but the problem is still there. I suspect these problems started when the update tried to install for the first time...

    What's going on? Help please

Hi, Which Windows build are you using?
This can be really important, and most people don't mention it or include it in their specs.
    Windows key + R, winver

The first time the update tried to install
    - which update was that? (Settings, Update History)

scanning and repairing my C drive.
That would be chkdsk - problems with your file system. This may or may not be related to the problems you observe. You can get the result of chkddsk having run as follows:
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 | Tutorials
    or
How to read Event Viewer log for Chkdsk in Windows 10 [Tip] | dotTech
    Please post the outcome.

Given your various problems, please start by checking your disk.
Download and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) - gives an excellent text summary on its GUI for each disk.
    Post the result.

How many disks have you? What sort are they? (See my specs for comparison).

    Thanks.

Not sure if this is where this belongs, but I too am having a problem with the ----1324 update, It started when it apparently tried to install the update by restarting overnight. In the AM, the wheel to load Windows 10 was spinning at the bottom of an otherwise black screen. After several attempts, I called ASUS Customer service, who talked me through restarting by going to a previous restore point. That worked - the only restore point I had was from the previous day. When I went to the UPDATE settings, it listed the update as-- having failed to install. After a couowple of hours, it appeared to reinstall the update, but when I tried to restart, the same thing happened and to use the laptop, I had to go back to the restore page. This has happened a couple of times since. Right now, on the main update page, it shows the ---1324 update as pending restart, along with a security update for something called Visual C. If I check on the older updates page, it shows the ----1324 updates, 3 of them actually, that failed to install, It does show other updates as installing correctly but didn't require a restart. I tried running troubleshooter on the update page, but it is also telling me I need to restart in order to access some files, and I don't want to go thru all that again. So I guess I'm asking is...are the older failed installs causing the problem? Or is it any update that requires a restart going to continue to do this? I don't really want to rebuild the whole system and lose what I've got on there.

KB4471324 is for Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.417) that was available 12/11/18.

I don’t know if it’s always the case but error code 0x800736b3 can indicate .net framework 3.5 isn’t installed.
Open control panel, select Troubleshooting, in the System and Security select Fix problems with Windows Update. Whatever it finds it usually tries to fix the issue. Let us know what it finds and if it fixes anything.

BTW “I searched google and found out that deleting a registry key and restarting the PC would fix that problem. I did it but the problem is still there” in post #1, please do not follow instructions like that, ask us first.

EDIT: Actually I'm more concerned on why the C drive needs to be repaired but for now let's see what the WU troubleshooter reports.

Hi guys, thank you for the responses...

I downloaded Hard Disk Sentinel and it looks my C drive is in very bad condition (Estimated remaining lifetime: 5 days ). I immediately tried to back up my files onto an external hard drive but I tried Macrium reflect and Casper 10 but both failed (stating write error, malfunctioning disk...). This is probably why the update can't install properly...

I'm REALLY worried now, I can't afford to lose my files. I know I should have done a backup earlier...but what should I do ...?

If you can still log in, try to copy and paste your data onto a USB flash drive or an external HDD. With such a short estimated lifetime, you need minimum "effort" to get that data moved immediately. This is also a case of don't worry about sorting out what to save, saving too much data can be sorted later at the right time. There are other ways to save your data and maybe someone has a better idea to do that within the short estimated lifetime.

Following that it might be worth having a Windows 10 USB install media for your computer after saving your data ASAP. That's what I'd look into but that requires more explanation.

I have around 850 GB of data, so a lot of files and folders to copy and paste... also isn't there a risk of file corruption with this method?
I'm currently reformatting my empty 1 TB drive and scanning for errors on it (I did quick format before, maybe this is the problem... I don't know)

Unfortunately your concerns about corrupted data are valid as it’s possible there is corrupted data already there with a potential for more data corruption to happen especially with write error and malfunctioning disk messages. You might want to bring the computer into a local computer shop you trust and see what they can do for you.
--- Even though you have around 850 GB of data, consider prioritizing which data to save first. The HDD lifetime projection is only 5 days, it needs minimum usage and stress until you decide what you want to do.
--- The lifetime projection isn't a timeframe set in stone but you do need to make a quick decision on what to do.

BTW since you use Macrium Reflect, you might be able to use that system image backup onto a new hard drive but I don't recall how since I haven't had to do that yet. If you haven't done so, create an up-to-date Macrium Reflect USB Rescue Media: I know this will add some usage to the defective HDD but that's what I would do just the same.

One more thing, did you happen to have used Control Panel's File History and saved it to an external HDD?

Go to the backup and restore forum and find out how to use your Macrium Reflect system image backup on a new HDD. I use Macrium Reflect to do monthly system image backups but since I haven't had any problems I don't know how to do that.

Hi, if you have no backups, then it will be pure luck as to what you can recover.

You could use Macrium to create a 'forensic' copy of your disk - an exact copy with all the problems- so at least you have that on hardware that is sound and not going to deteriorate further.

You can't use programs like Macrium to create a 'normal' image as for this the file structure must be sound - no CRC errors.

If you reach a point where you can't log in you can still use Macrium's boot disk to boot your PC.

    =====================
For the future: there are free programs that can monitor your drives' state and report when they detect problems - even by email in some cases.

Periodic disk imaging is itself a check - at least on the used part of the disk- as CRC errors are flagged when reading the disk.
