Consider using Lazesoft Free recovery suite to save your data. I have used it a few times. I can't guarantee it will work for you but it's worth finding out if you reach a dead end. The first part is to download and create a USB drive on another computer. Then use that USB drive on your computer: you'll be able to search for the locations of your data and save to.
    Download Lazesoft Products

But the thing is the disk appears to be very end of life- perhaps deteriorating the more it's used.

So best make a copy of it and THEN try recovery from the copy.

Recovery programs can be disk intensive.

Thank you for your responses. I managed to do a partial backup of my files with Macrium Reflect. This is a capture of Hard Disk Sentinel, the estimated lifetime increased a little. Performance says 100% though, does this mean anything? Will I need to replace the HDD? Formatting the disk won't help at all, correct?

You will definitely need to replace your disk. An opportunity for an upgrade perhaps? SSD?

You will need to do a clean install, of course. Tutorial available.

License activation should be automatic, no key needed.
