From what I've seen posted on Microsoft's Yammer group, Microsoft is updating the BIOS via Windows update for its devices, Surface etc. Not sure if they have switched that to all devices.

Yup, good point - MS can update their H/W thru' WU...

IME, however, is an interface that does not change the firmware as such.

Thanks for the confirmation. I wonder why its not been widely publicized?
But its scary. On some PC's if a BIOS update is corrupted there is no recovery. Motherboard must be replaced.
Not always - there are ways to recover corrupt BIOS without changing the motherboard, or the BIOS chip on the motherboard.

Not all PC's have BIOS recovery. Many Dell's (mostly older) do not have any option other than to replace BIOS chip (almost never available) or motherboard. The ASRock Z77 motherboard in my previous desktop build did not have a BIOS recovery.

My 2014 Dell laptop doesn't have a Firmware option showing in Device Manager - this must be a more recent feature?

I only update the BIOS using the file from Dell's support site at a time of my choosing

2014 Dell's do not have the BIOS recovery feature of newer ones. Be careful with BIOS updates. But, as its a 2014 model there may never be any more BIOS updates. 5 years seems to be the cutoff point for most.

One of the user tech's ("rockstar") on the Dell Community Forums reported he got a BIOS update for a Dell via the Windows 10 Updates.
Was this a fluke or is this something that is coming for all or selected PC's?
Someone pulling people's leg. No, the bios does not get updated unless the user allows it to happen, by downloading it and running the updater.

Most of the Dell's I have worked on lately have a Dell installed updater program. It installs driver and bios updates. I doubt it was Windows updates.
It will not automatically download bios updates. Drivers are the same way, since it gives the user a chance to install the updates if they wish to break the machine.

You are absolutely wrong about driver updates. They do get installed automatically without user notification by default.

Yup that has been a sore point (driver auto updates) -- there is a way to disable it tho'... IIRC.

But there would be lot of bricked PC's if firmware updates were forced... eg. MS can't guarantee no power outages... so not even a consideration (Surface users may attest differently)
