    1803 & activation, 1809 & HP printers

    Greetings
    two questions:
    1) is the problem of ver.1803 later build and demand for activation solved? (besides moving on to 1809)
    2) is the problem of ver.1809 and HP printers solved?
1809 solves the activation problem but HP printers stops working (my suspicion is that they are kicked of home network)
    thank you

If you had activation problems earlier in November they may have had nothing to do with which version you are on. Your specs say you have Pro, so this may be relevant.

    Bree,
I'm in windows 10 pro for over 2 years and never had an activation problem. One of 1803 updates (can't remember which KB) caused demand for activation but activation servers were unreachable according to windows settings.
One of the tips I received here was to upgrade by force to 1809 (it was not offered to me yet). I did it and the activation problem disaapeared. so there are no problem between me and MS.
but in 1809 my HP printer ceased to work. So I rolled back to 1803.
I don't know if I am activated now but no demand for activation appears on my desktop as before since I rolled back to an early build in 1803. Now windows updates are neutralized.
This should explain my two questions.
    thank you

forgot to mention that when I upgraded to windows 1o pro I didn't have MS account (and I don't want to have since it made a mess on my laptop where I upgraded to windows 10 home from windows 8.1)
I'd like to avoid having MS account as much as I can

The point I was making is that early November Microsoft broke their activation servers. I lost my own Pro activation, as did many other TenForum members. A lot of crazy suggestions floated round the internet as to how to fix this. Actually none of them were likely to work as the problem was one of Microsoft's own making, a snafu on their activation servers.

Those of us who just sat it out and did nothing got our activation back when MS fixed things at their end.

I don't know if I am activated now but no demand for activation appears on my desktop as before since I rolled back to an early build in 1803.
There shouldn't be a problem now.

That has been a common complaint on the HP forums. Here's a typical one, the only 'solution' so far is to roll back to 1803. An HP employee does say....

Yes, the feedback is also taken.
Solved: Re: HP 5740e not working on Windows 10 1809 since update - HP Support Community - 6859579

HP do have a page that says...
HP Products tested with Windows 10 October 2018 Update

HP will provide Windows 10 October 2018 Update drivers and software for tested products on an on-going basis.
To check for Windows 10 October 2018 Update support for your HP Product refer to the document HP Products Tested with Windows 10
HP Windows 10 Support Center for HP PCs and Printers

...but as the link provided goes to a page still saying ...
products that have been tested with Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803).
HP Products Tested with Windows 10 | HP® Customer Support

...looks like they haven't made much (any?) progress yet. That page should get updated when (if?) they do, so keep checking that link.

    Bree,
So if I understood you correctly I can allow 1803 to receive updates since the activation problem is solved but avoid reaching 1809 since the HP problem is not solved. In HP forum the best answer I got was to roll back to 1803.
My printer is 4500 (an old one from win7 days) and the last setup doesn't look like win10 though HP insists that 4500 is win10 compatible. So either I wait for a new 4500 setup or wait for 1810+
    many thanks again

    Bree,
slmgr /ato failed but I'm in winver 1803 build 17134.345
and I'm not ready yet to update to 1809 to solve the problem
HP drivers are from 2015 so they are insensitive to 1809 problems. The way I see it MS should fix HP printers problems in some future update

slmgr /ato works for me in Pro build 17134.441, so we can't blame the activation servers this time. @Superfly may have some suggestions....

Yes, you can allow updates. If you haven't already done so you should switch windows update's advanced options from 'Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted)' to 'Semi-Annual Channel' to defer 1809 for now. Setting a non-zero number of days for 'Defer Features Updates' has the side-effect of preventing you finding any cumulative updates other than a 'Patch Tuesday' one.

Check if you have deferred Feature Updates. If you have, like I did to avoid installation of v. 1809, make sure both numbers ... are set to 0.

    @zivshosh

In which way did slmgr fail? /ato is for unactivated systems... /dlv for info

Try running ADT to check your activation - it runs the activation service in the background much like slmgr /ato.
