Update version 1803 (3) always fails with error 0x80240034

Every time my Windows 10 tries to update to the latest version of Windows 10, I always get the following error messages:

Feature update to Windows 10, version 1803 (3)
Last failed install attempt on ‎11/‎25/‎2018 - 0x80240034

Googling the update tells me that the update was released in June. This means that this update has been failing for six straight months.

Does anybody know how to fix this?

Windows Update Error 0x80240034 - Microsoft Community

0x80240034 Windows Update Error stands for WU_E_DOWNLOAD_FAILED, it says the update failed during download.

    To John W. Roberts,

thank you for the files. I did not use them because I examined reason for error code once more with this result:

    "I use

    WIN 10

    Office XP

    Power Point 2002

    Access 2002

WIN 10 Update looks for updates for this programs; resulting error code 0x80240034.

I clicked at the update-info for each of this programs at "Update Verlauf" and was linked to a website from microsoft.com showing this information:We're sorry, this download is no longer available. "

    - one possible cause? It's a long thread, and you can see at the start SFC / DISM etc didn't help

You could try downloading the iso manually, and upgrading without accepting updates (disconnect your internet e.g.)

That error code means the download could not complete successfully....

In such cases, an in-place upgrade using an ISO made by Microsoft's Media Creation Tool should succeed where windows update fails. Note that the MCT now makes install media for the current version which is 1809. That should not be a problem and would be the version I'd use in your place (and am using on my PC). This tutorial explains the steps...

But if you really insist on upgrading to 1803 you'll need to use an 1803 ISO. This 3rd-party tool from Heidoc can generate a link to get one direct from Microsoft.

Thank you so much for your reply.

    Generalise beyond that.

    There could be
    - other such programs not in that list. Other updates.
    - other clues in that very very long thread. Have you read it? I only extracted one item that struck me as relevant to your error number.

Now I get another error for a different update

    I get

    2018-09 Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4090007)
    Download error - 0x8024a206

    I tried the

    "net stop wuauserv"

But I am unable to get to the rest

    (net stop cryptSvc
    net stop bits
    net stop msiserver
    Ren
    C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.old
    Ren
    C:\Windows\System32\catroot2.old
    net start wuauserv
    net start bits
    net start msiserver)

Because every time I try to type into an elevated command prompt "net stop wususerv" I always get

    Code:
    Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.16299.309]
    (c) 2017 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>net stop wuauserv
The Windows Update service is stopping..
The Windows Update service could not be stopped.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>

An in-place upgrade to 1803 or 1809 (or even a repair install using your existing 1709) should fix those windows update errors.

We've both given you that idea (end my post #2), so worth trying, assuming no disk corruption, enough free space, no conflicting programs...
