Didn't MS say downloading and installing updates before they were released thru the Update process was risky? Isn't that why people were losing files w/ one of the recent updates? Why are people in such a hurry to update? Just my $.02.

When those people lost files it was thru Win update OCT 2-6 and the update was pulled.

I do them manually so I can prepare with a Macrium image backup beforehand so there are no UNcorrectable issues. And no surprises.

Yes, for earlier ones MS have said that it's safest to wait for windows update to offer a Features update. This is because the automatic windows update check will not offer it to machines with known blocking issues. However, this time they were (apparently) so confident they has got it right that they toned down their normal recommendation, emphasised how checking for updates was 'safe' because it would still check for blocking issues, and made it available to anyone who checked manually (this netted some inexperienced users who were unaware a Features Update was out there). Compare and contrast....

For the best experience, we recommend you wait until Windows 10 is automatically offered to your device....
...If you don’t want to wait for the update to roll out to you, you can manually check for updates on your personal PC using the steps below. This will only work if your device is eligible to get the Fall Creators Update as part of the initial roll out phase.... Alternatively, you can manually get the update today via the Software Download Site. This option is only recommended for advanced users on devices running a licensed version of Windows 10.

While we encourage you to wait until the update is offered to your device, if you’re an advanced user on an actively serviced version of Windows 10 and would like to install the Windows 10 October 2018 Update now, you can do so by manually checking for updates .... We are also streamlining the ability for users who seek to manually check for updates by limiting this to devices with no known key blocking issues, based on our ML model. If we detect that your device has a compatibility issue, we will not install the update until that issue is resolved, even if you “Check for updates.”

Two thing went horribly wrong. First, the file deletions were not a compatibility issue, it was down to a bug in the 1809 code. Second, most of the (now) known blocking issues were only discovered after the event.

Why are people in such a hurry to update? Just my $.02.
Some of us like to live dangerously? Seriously though, some of us like the challenge of finding the bugs they've left in (also we have made Macrium images to go back to if it all goes pear-shaped). Personally I found 1809 to be surprisingly bug free (apart from the 'big one' - and that didn't affect me). Anyway, someone has to go first or MS will never get any telemetry to tell them if/when it safe for the rest of us.

I guess I will take the plunge, and download it manually via the Windows 10 Update Assistant. If it acts up in any way however, I will revert back to 1803.

Personally I think its now safe to use I haven't experienced any problems with the October update after the re-release if there are problems on your system if you can just revert back to a previous version just make sure to do a system restore point before upgrading.

I agree with @Skynet100, I've had 1809 since 2nd October and had no problems.

If you want to go ahead, I would however recommend using the MCT to download the ISO and performing in in-place upgrade. Generally that seems a more reliable upgrade method than the Update Assistant or letting windows update do the upgrade.

One issue is that many have gone to extreme measures to turn off and block all scources of telemerty so that does not help matters. I put all my computers on basic and thats it. MS still gets some to work with.

Same here, In fact I took the plunge a few days early with a computer with 2 drives and data on the spinner.
Took my laptop with me into the hospital on day one and updated it there, clicked install and woke up and found it finished wtih no issues.

Thinking about it, Many install only on VM's and that is not a true test.
