You seem to have done well with dalchina's assistance (and some luck). Macrium is a very sensible precaution.

I would just like to add this. If you now make a Recovery Drive usb with the option ticked to include system files then it can be used to do a 'factory reset' on the machine. The system files on the recovery drive usb will include all the HP customisations, apps and drivers for this PC. It can be used to repair the PC, or even reinstall Windows 10 with all its HP-specifc content onto a new drive should the original fail.

I also tried to do Malwarebytes but Chrome blocked the download as a dangerous file!
    From Malwarebytes,

Late Thursday evening (11/29) into Friday morning (11/30) we started receiving reports from users that downloads of Malwarebytes were being block on both Chrome and Firefox. After doing some research, we identified the issue is with the Google SafeBrowsing feature in these browsers, and we are actively working with Google to figure out a resolution.
In the meantime, we have identified and implemented some workarounds on our end to help ease user frustration.

    • For starters, the main issue seems to stem from the URL being downloaded from.

    • We have updated the majority of our public facing download links to use the above URL without the trailing the slash, so the majority of users should be able to download Malwarebytes without issue.
    • If you want to give a URL to anyone for a direct download, please make sure to leave off the trailing slash in the URL, and there should be no issue.
    • We are also working directly with Google to have this resolved on their end and determine what steps can be put in place to prevent this from happening in the future.
    • Users can also use web browsers that don't implement Google SafeBrowsing such as Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge.

    Morning all

Thanks for everything. These forums offer good advice and spark off fresh ideas about solving the problems. Even if they don't hit the nail on the head they offer some reassurance the equivalent of DON'T PANIC from the Douglas Adams classic.

So, a progress report with a link which I hope will provide another possible solution for those with sound issues.

Malwarebytes - the download issue is sorted and I installed this. A scan reveals plenty of Chrome-related PUPs and a program which I had downloaded accidentally from one of those pages with confusing multiple buttons. I've quarantined the latter but left the others in place for my daughter to decide upon. As I have also added Belarc Advisor and Macrium, that might help her in the future.

Sound - it was not the v1803 dodgy driver problem (the laptop is v1709 so that's not surprising) though the root cause may be similar. Belarc Advisor clearly showed Realtek High Definition Audio for speaker/microphone but this was not showing up in Device Manager. After a bit of googling I found this

No Audio Output Device Is Installed In Windows 10- FIX (Working)

The first part of this was enough and worked like a dream. The appropriate drivers were of course still sitting on the PC. The "update" section at the bottom actually deals with the v1803 dodgy driver, which makes me think the two issues bear some relationship. So now Realtek is back shown on Device manager and sound is back! This was the problem that stumped us over a year ago and had here uninstalling Windows updates. Hopefully that is now permanently sorted; if not the solution appears to be close to hand.

I have never had to reinstall from a drive image. I took one image of the whole hard disk and one of the C:\ drive, which (unfortunately) also contains data. Whichever I restore from would presumably overwrite data, so I have to emphasise the importance of regular data backups as well. Some people (and I'm not really talking about her) just cry "boring" at all this but it is not them that have to sort out the mess afterwards!

I'll now look at the thread on stopping updates altogether. So far there has been no attempt to upgrade to v1803. Of course if good backups (drive and data) are in place it should be less critical if it tries.
