As quoted from the latest KB4023057 description, "This update includes reliability improvements to Windows Update Service components in Windows 10, versions 1507, 1511, 1607, 1703, 1709, and 1803. It may also take steps to free up disk space on your device if you do not have enough disk space to install Windows updates."

Scary, especially with your added the bold and underlining that weren't in the original text. Almost makes you think MS will wipe your drive without asking.,

But the answer would seem to be more prosaic. Read further down and "When a Windows feature update is available for your device, you may see a message on the Windows Update settings page or elsewhere that asks you to free up disk space by removing files or applications that you do not use regularly...". So it seems it may just suggest what could be deleted and leave the final decision to you.

Lets face it, if the user has a tablet with a 32GB or 64GB SSD they're going to need as much help as possible to squeeze a features update onto it. And if you have a TB or two available it's not likely to even bother to run.

On other useful and sensible action it may take if you're short on space is to temporarily apply ntfs compression on your user folder while the update takes place, then put it back as it was when updated.
To help free up disk space, this update may compress files in your user profile directory so that Windows Update can install important updates... After you install the update, your files are restored to their original state...

Yeah, you're right, the bolding and underlining were likely over the top. I posted quickly and didn't think it through. I was hoping folks would go read the entire KB document, but rushed and didn't post a link to it. My bad with apologies and lesson learned.

No, not really a 'bad', just expressing your point of view (either deliberately or subconsciously). So many other posters seem to suspect KB4023057 as being some sort of underhand way to force a features update on you while you're not looking.

Now that wouldn't be the first time (remember the GWX app in 2015?) but I don't think that's the case here. It just seems to be a 'helper app' for systems with not enough free space for the upgrade. It installs as a separate app, not as part of the system. It should only ever get run after a features update arrives in the normal way through windows update.

OK, now you've done it!. I was only thinking of the first v. 1809 update. I had completely put the endless hours I spent thwarting GWX out of my mind. Yes, this system was originally a W7 factory load and I put off W10 until the last free minute. I think the term "helper app" is correct though for this KB.

" These files are copied by a reliability update KB4023057 for Windows 10 to improve Windows Update Service components in your machine... Yesterday night I was working on one of my Windows 10 machines and suddenly I received a notification from my firewall software that following 2 executables were trying to access/connect to Internet: sedsvc.exe sedlauncher.exe... I immediately got the idea that the sedsvc.exe and sedlauncher.exe files are definitely related to downloading and installing the new feature update released for Windows 10."

from What are Sedsvc.exe, Sedlauncher.exe Files and REMPL Folder in Windows 10?
