Do you notice those numbers in brackets after the failed message ? that is an error code to make a long story short it looks like my windows update datastore is corrupt you can find those errorcodes and what they mean here

When something doesn't work as it should i want to know why so i keep digging.

i've never heard off you have to power off your router to get this stuff working again but he i'll give it a shot.
Power off router and reboot before running the script is just the easy way to make sure that windows cannot run any sort of update check in the background when running repairs. Therefore there should be no errors with stopping services or deleting files when running WU repair script.

EDIT: See the thread here. Although it discusses Windows 7 the same applies to Windows 10.

Following a clean install, Windows Update remains at Checking For - Microsoft Community

    1. Disconnect the computer from the Internet so Windows Update cannot automatically update itself to 7.6.7600.320.
    2. Perform a fresh reload from Recovery Media or Windows 7/64 with SP1 RTM.
    3. When the installation prompts for updates, choose "Ask Me Later".
    4. Apply KB3020369 and then KB3172605 in that order.
    5. Restore the Internet connection, configure update settings to your preference and launch Windows Update as normal.
Points 1 and 5 apply here.

FYI: Also check that you have the 1809 October Servicing Stack Update installed. If you don't have it get the standalone installer from here:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...october-9-2018

    (Microsoft Update Catalog link)

To install - open Powershell Admin then use:

    wusa.exe "Full Path To.msu"

Replace Full Path To with the file path

i'm guessing the issue is resolved but there are no updates available (i'm on 1809 ) and use a third party antivirus i'm just not sure about this that file always remained empty before.

You can either uninstall an update and reboot to see if it gets offered again or just wait until next patch tuesday.

Glad you got it sorted. Can't say I understand as I have Norton on other systems, not 1809, and the updates come down.

Thanks for posting that the solution also worked for you.

It seems Dell has some agreement with mcafee they can offer that software free of charge for 1 year with every new Dell system purchased .Somebody should investigate why windows update stops working but the big companies will blame eachother and we customers have to deal with it sad but true.
