Great the troubleshooter result is clear.
80070002 is quite common and there are lots of solved threads- just search the forum for - yes- 80070002

You can try Tweaking.com's free repair tool - select only options to restore services, repair Windows update.
If all else fails, do an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all programs, data and most settings.
For that you will need an 1803 iso, freely downloadable.
Try basics first. Time to step back as you keep encountering corruption.
1. First check your disk(s):
Download and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) (includes SSDs)
(This gives exceptionally good text comments)
Post a screenshot of its GUI using the Insert Image icon above your post.
If all disks are reported as good, continue.
2. Now check your file system:
From an admin command or powershell prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:

3. If ok, then from an admin command or powershell prompt run
SFC /SCANNOW
If that fails, try post #2

I just ran the sfc /scannow command from an elevated prompt and it came back clean. I'll reboot and try the updater again.
Edit: oh wait, I see you posted while I was away and didn't refresh my screen. Let me read your post....
Edit 2: haven't had time to fiddle with it yet. Stay tuned... (laptop still works and runs fine.. just can't do those updates... so I'm using it until I have time to work on it some more).

Well this is interesting. Tonight I brought up the shutdown menu and noticed I had the option to update and shutdown or update and restart, so I chose the latter option. When it rebooted, I checked for updates and the updates had downloaded and installed. Nothing was pending.
So the whole issue has been rendered moot. Very strange! I don't suppose it could be the updates held up my Microsoft, could it? I would think they wouldn't even show as available. Regardless, my laptop update issues have resolved themselves on their own... or perhaps in spite of my attempts to help the process complete itself.
Thanks all for your attempts to help!
Lol. Computers and patience are often at odds with each other. At least in my experience!
