I have tried repeatedly to update over the past week and it's a no-go. What is the best COA?

    Hi battlezone

    Could you please run

    sfc /scannow

If it reports errors rerun. It may be necessary to run three times to repair all files.

if sfc /scannow does not report errors you could try the trouble shooter

I already ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter. Problems found:

Potential Windows Update Database error detected - fixed
Windows Update components must be repaired - fixed (not run)
Check for pending updates - fixed

Should I have restarted after running the troubleshooter and after applying the fixes? I simply went ahead and clicked Retry under Windows Update. Same result, same error code.

Also: After initializing, whatever that means in this context, under Windows Update, under Status it says Preparing to download - 100 % (what does that percentage refer to?), but nothing happens for 10 minutes until it actually starts downloading and showing a download percentage.

    And it failed again.

I mentioned Windows Update Trouble shooter if Sfc /scannow came up clean.

I think the second line says it all

Windows Update components must be repaired - fixed (not run)

    Did you run

    sfc /scannow

When you say the second line says it all, please explain. There was a green check mark and it said fixed. The (not run) info is from the advanced view.

    I did run sfc /scannow.

There is a Windows 10 Update reset but I think most of the components you've already run through trouble shooting.

Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

This deletes your update history should you try it.

I think I would be inclined to perform the the inplace repair. sfc /scannow is not finding errors and trouble shooter can't fix the issue.

While the inplace repair is non-destructive, leaves apps and data I always recommend a data backup.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

The boot media has to be of the same version, that is V1803

Any chance you use Macrium and could restore your OS to an older version where updates were working?

I did reset the Windows Update Repair history and it didn't fix the problem.

I'll have to try the In-Place Upgrade. I did make a Windows 10 Pro Repair Disk soon after I got the computer. This should be V1803, since if I check what's in the pc right now is V1803 (OS Build 17134.228.

You can use the MCT tool to get a fresh copy. I just use a USB thumbdrive, 8GB

Should you use just check the big print on the page, You want April. I say this as no one knows when they may relaunch 1809 ( October)
