How to stop WU from trying to install 1803

One out of five computers has failed to install 1803 for months. I have tried everything suggested to get it installed with no success.

At this point I want to stop it from trying again. I remember someone posting a way to stop a sepcific update from trying to be installed, while allowing all other WU to function (this computer updates 1709 just fine, definitions fine, etc. so I don't want to completely disrupt WU). I searched and could not find the answer.

I think it was a third party program of some sort. Can anyone help? To keep automatically trying to install 1803 and rendering my computer useless for several hours is getting old and at some point who knows if it will successfully restore the previous version as it does each time it fails.

As a bit of an update I ended up having to reinstall Windows on the computer that was not updating from 1709. What happened was that as it was doing its monthly attempt to install 1803 (180x?) the computer got turned off. Long story somewhat short it would not boot properly, could not be repaired etc. using built in Windows tools.

I installed 1803 using a USB drive I had created. A couple of funny (sad?) anecdotes. While discussing with MS CS I was told I would not be able to reactivate Windows 10 due to it being a free upgrade from Win 7. Obviously not true. I mean how could MS not know about their own OS activation process?

While installing Windows from the USB drive I was told it would take some time but when it restarted after few minutes I was puzzled and ran the installation again. Once gain MS chimed in by saying I must have had a corrupt iso file so I should re download the Creation tool etc. Again obviously not true as the computer booted up just fine when I tried.

Now for the admission that I know will be met with rolled eyes. This is my wife's computer. She basically uses it for the internet but had some files on it. The files had not been backed up for quite a while. She was quite distraught with the thought of losing what she had not saved. During the installation process it asked about creating a windows.old file and sure enough it did and files are there. Could go on but that's enough. Got lots of work to do to get it back running how it was.
