    Windows Update only works manually, it doesn't seem to check automatically, I think...

    I thought the tool use was O&O Shut Up 10, though I already Undid all changes in there a while ago.

    The automatic check could fail for a variety of reasons, including being disabled by group policy.

    Try the above, run the Windows Update Troubleshooter and post the outcome.
    If ok, see if it then works, after that other repairs could be attempted.
