Thank you guys very much for your kind concern to help me. I will read the in-place upgrade post and as dalchina said I hope that I'll not be forced to re-install everything.
I'll backup all my files before going on with the in-place upgrade.

I don't know whether this is going to be helpful to anyone but I thought that I ought to post it.
Update was repeatedly failing on an installation on one of my machines. When I checked through the settings, Delivery Optimisation "Allow downloads from other PCs" was turned on. On my main machine, I use Disk Cleanup to clear out Windows Update data. So I turned off "Allow downloads from other PCs" on a just-in-case-basis and that fixed the problem.

Good, but what happens if you run SFC /SCANNOW?
