Version 1803 remains after reseting+notify download update not working

I recently bought a laptop with windows 10 pro preinstalled. I wasn't quite sure which default version it came with when i first bought it, however there was the 'Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4100347)'. Right after I have finish installing the update that i found out it was actually a problematic update and it causes trouble in many users. So i decided to reset the laptop to get my previous windows back. However right after it has done resetting, when I check the version of windows (I hadn't connected it to the internet) it was still 1803 and the KB4100347 update was gone. I have tried restoring the laptop to factory image but it didn't work either. Does that mean my windows default version was 1803 when i bought it, or is there anyway I can get back to the version that i first bought my laptop (in a more standard way instead of downloading windows online)?

Also, for asking windows to 'notify for downloads and auto install' updates, it did work before i reset my laptop (i.e. the time i just got my laptop) and it asked me to download the updates manually by clicking the 'download' button. However, after resetting it, windows update just ignore it and starts downloading updates automatically once I click 'check for updates'. I tried switching the network as 'metered' and luckily it was doing fine. But as long as it pops back to 'non-metered', it just starts auto downloading updates again. How can i have it notifying me for downloading updates without changing the network as 'non-metered'?

Thanks a lot for your help.

"right after it has done resetting, when I check the version of windows (I hadn't connected it to the internet) it was still 1803"

If you weren't connected to the internet, it's a good chance your laptop came with 1803 pre-installed.
What Build are you on now ? Hit Win+R and type winver then Enter. Build 17134.254 is current.
All Settings/Updates & Security/Windows Updates/View update history should show all installed updates. You should also 'Check for updates' on this page while you're there.
KB4100347 was processor microcode security update, not for all PCs. It did cause some issues but if laptop is running fine now, it probably installed fine.

    Welcome to TenForums @JohnMa715

Your specs say you have Pro. That means you can use the Group Policy editor to set windows update to notify you before downloading updates. If it worked before you did the reset it should still work now. Try setting the policy to 'unconfigured' the set it up again. Perhaps some registry settings got a bit mixed up by the reset.

@mrgeek Thank your for your reply. my current build is 17134.1. So maybe I should not bother going back to previous versions of windows then. By the way in that case should I install all updates related to 1803?

17134.1 IS the initial version of 1803, so apparently it came preinstalled. Yes, you should install all updates, there was one issued just yesterday. Are you saying updates are failing or causing issues ? Those a 2 diff things. I'm assuming that the updates are failing each time vs causing operating issues. Here's how I'd proceed -

I would attempt to this to get up to date - Go to Windows (C)/Windows/SoftwareDistribution and rename the folder SoftwareDistribution.old. This will delete all downloaded updates, in case they're corrupted. Next, go to Settings/Updates & Security/Troubleshoot/Windows Update and run the troubleshooter to reset WU (this will create a clean SoftwareDistribution folder). Now to fetch the clean, uncorrupted update files -

Go here to download the critical service stack update - http://www.catalog.update.microsoft....px?q=kb4343669 (2nd on list, assuming you have 64bit Win10). Don't install yet.
Here is an update history for 1803 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...update-history
Open the link at the top of the list on L, dated 9/11, which includes all the ones below. You can see that the current version is Build 17134.285. At article bottom 'How to get this update' will take you here - http://www.catalog.update.microsoft....px?q=KB4457128
Download the Cumulative update (last on list, assuming you have x64 bit Win10). Do not install this either, yet.

Now you have all updates to date, in standalone format. Next, perform Clean Boot to prevent ANY 3rd party interference (tutorial here - Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts ) and restart. After restart, DISCONNECT internet.
Install the service stack update first, then the cumulative. See if updates install correctly and laptop restarts. Login and check that version is up to date. Then reconnect internet and enjoy (cross fingers). Any issues, post error codes. Good Luck
