Fed up with Windows Update installing nVidia driver automatically

    Hello guys,

I'm asking this question here because I truly have no clue what to do anymore to solve this problem. After a clean install of Windows (without internet connection), as soon as I connect to the internet, Windows downloads and installs an old Nvidia driver with its unneeded software (like HD Audio) by itself.

I want to prevent that and here is what I tried before connecting the Ethernet cable:
    1. Go to Windows Update group policy (see picture below), disabling 3, enabling 2 and configuring 1 to let Windows notify me before downloading and install any updates.

    2. Setting the following option:

    3. After those options I reboot, connect to the internet and immediately use the Hide Updates .diagcab tool to hide the Nvidia driver.

And yet, after all this, Windows Update still downloads and installs the Nvidia driver by itself

I know I can remove the installed driver afterwards but I don't like to have traces of the old driver along with bloatware. I'd like to freshly install the isolated newest driver.

I just want to know how on earth I can prevent Windows Update to not install the Nvidia driver by itself. Why don't these settings work at all?

Are you sure it is Windows and not nVidia. Pretty sure in Geforce experience there is an option to opt in or out of driver updates.

If not geForce check other nVidia software.

The easiest way is to just go to Nvidia's website and install the latest driver direct from them, that will then take presidence over future updates.

After the clean install of Windows I don't have any software installed, so neither Geforce Experience.

I can't make it, the autodownload and installation of the old driver by Windows Update happens too fast to be able to download and install the latest one from Nvidia's website.

What I'm curious about is why all these settings don't have any effect on Windows Update.

After a fresh install, I wait for it to install its driver, then go and get it from Nvidia's website.

But I don't want to let Windows Update install an Nvidia driver. That's my issue that I'm trying to fix but don't know how.

Try this guide. Looks like it might still work even though the guide is from 2015.

I always have the latest NVIDIA drivers, motherboard drivers, etc. downloaded (on a Data partition which doesn't get formatted but you could put them on something like a USB stick) before doing a Windows 10 install - without an Internet connection, of course.

Install the drivers then connect to the Internet. The other advantage of not being connected to the Internet while installing Windows 10 is you also don't get Candy Crush, Disney Magic Kingdoms, March of Empires, etc. installed. I also turn off and remove all tiles before connecting to the Internet as well (not sure if this is also needed to stop Candy Crush and the other rubbish installing but I do it anyway as I have no use for the tiles).

From what I read and being advised, it's better to install the latest Cumulative Updates of Windows and other smaller updates first, before installing drivers. Hence me trying to connect to the internet before installing the Nvidia driver.

Regarding the bloatware game apps, before plugging in the ethernet cable I can see all those icons having a downward arrow, but I can not remove them.

Thanks but I have already tried this option.

    To remove the tiles:

Right click - turn live tile off. Then right click - unpin from start.

Not sure if the first part is necessary but I do it anyway. You have to do it for every tile, one at a time.
