    Cannot update from 10586, v 1511, to 16299, v 1803

My laptop runs Win10, 10586 and when I boot up I have been getting the message to update.
No matter what I do like follow the instructions, use an iso file to update the update fails.

Loading, verification and installation seem o.k., but everytime it fails.

    The error code is 0x80004005.

    The Laptop is a Packard Bell Core3 SoloSU3500, 4GB Ram, 500GB HD, Graphics Radeon HD 4330 512MB.

    Hi.
Might want to put your laptop info in the "2nd computer" specs of the forum so we have easy access to it.

Do you have the correct ISO of v1803 ready to go? If so, I would suggest:

    • Make sure you have an image of the current installation (using Macrium or another similar) on an external drive
    • Disable or uninstall all anti-virus/anti-malware software (except Defender)
    • Remove any external devices/monitors/keyboard/mouse/etc.
    • From the Windows Desktop, right-click and Mount the ISO
    • Double-click and run setup.exe

That should do it for you.

I just did an Upgrade of a Win8.1 to Win10. I started the Upgrade while booted into Win8.1 [it had major problems and wouldn't do a reset] using the MCT-created USB drive and chose to keep files and apps. The resultant OS Version was 1803 Build 17134.1 and worked fine. Win10 had never been on this computer but it Activated okay [it was connected to the 'net]. The next check for updates got Build 17134.254. So far all is good and the Upgrade was free.

Good to know. I think MS never turned off the free activation. I did one a few weeks ago and it activated fine.

I saw in another thread that people were advised to run SFC /scannow. So the Laptop is just doing this.

I have put the Laptop details into the thread starter, but could nt find the 2nd computer section.

I tried the ISO way several times and it failed every time, but the USB install might be the way forward.

Does the error code have any bearing?
I am also running a dual boot with Linux Mint, where Windows 10 is set as default in the GRUB.

How to Fix Windows Update Error Code 0x80004005 - Appuals.com

I assume you've done something to stop updates, as you're on an old build, or Windows Update has been broken for a long time. Any idea which?

    Please try
    chkdsk c: /F
    from an admin command prompt
    then if ok
    SFC /SCANNOW

    If ok, then
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials
    - which should cover items in the article above.

If ok, then try running the Windows Update troubleshooter.

    Report outcome at each stage.

I'll have to leave comment on your dual boot config to someone else.

The laptop is going through an ISO file update now and is taking its time.<br>SFC / scannow came back o.k. I did this before starting the update process.
I do not use the laptop very often and before now had it sitting in the corner. The update was set to automatic.
I use it mainly for software to link to the car.

    Thank you for your help.
After yet another failed install I bit the bullet and did a usb install and that meant configure and reinstall a bit.

Do you mean you did a clean install?
    - including deleting the existing partitions and installing Windows to unallocated space on the drive?

If that's now working, please start using disk imaging routinely so that you usually have a chance to recover to a previous working state- even if your disk fails and you need a new one.

E.g. use Macrium Reflect (free) -which we very often recommend here- + a large enough external disk for the disk images (base and differential images).
