" only "non essential" usb device is my printer so should I just unplug it or unplug it and uninstall the drivers "

Just disconnect from usb plug. No need to uninstall drivers. Then try the command in Post 5 to repair image. Then attempt update after restart in clean boot (Part One in this tute) which will take care of all 3rd party services from interfering -

You should have no issues. Drives don't count as a major hardware change.

This is the activation trouble shooter tutorial. Have a read. Notice the bit about linking to MS account. I don't think this is necessary for your situation but it might not hurt if for some reason you want to make more extensive changes at some point. Also acts as backstop if you do bump into troubles.

Use Activation Troubleshooter in Windows 10

    TenForums Clean install tutorial

    Clean Install Windows 10

As you had windows 10 on PC just click I don't have product key, your installation will be validated against MS servers.

    Great, glad things went smoothly.

Now when you get all your programs loaded take an Image with a tool like Macrium and when ever you need it you can restore to a fully installed clean machine.
