Finding size of installed Updates

The thing to bear in mind about the quality updates (the ones that provide security fixes and patches) is that an update will supersede and replace previous parts of the system. As replacements rather than additions they should not be taking up much extra space.

However, backups of the previous updates are kept and these do take up space. These are held in the Component Store (WinSxS). You can determine the size of WinSxS and (if you wish) clean out the old superseded update backup packages.

Running Disk Clean up and clicking 'clean up system files' is another way to see if there are any update backups that can be cleaned up, and to clean them up if you choose.

Features Updates are another thing entirely, these will update the version of Windows you are using. Youe build 15063 is version 1703, the current version is 1803, build 17134. A features Update is an upgrade, and as such will keep your previous system in a Windows.old folder for 10 days after the upgrade in case you need to roll back. After 10 days this should be automatically deleted, but you can delete it earlier by running Disk Clean up to clean up system files.

Just wondering what the basis of your concern is... do you not have sufficient space on your disk, or are you just curious?

I've had Win 10 consistently on this PC through several builds (without clean installing) and not noticed any significant increase in the space taken up by Windows.

Given your stated build, what is your current build number? (Window key + R, winver).

MS has been working on 'delta updates' such that whilst each update is cumulative (encompasses all others since the last build), what is downloaded to a given PC should be limited to what is necessary, reducing the size of the download.

Thus although you can see the size of each update in the thread per update per build in the News section, is does not follow that what is downloaded by Windows Update is ncecessarily as large.

You can get a rough breakdown via Settings:


Now consider what routine downloads there might be:
- windows updates
- defender updates (more than daily typically) (frequency set in Task scheduler)
- other security software updates (if any)
- app updates (frequency set in Task scheduler)
- app data updates
- other installed program updates (may be automatic, or generate a prompt)

Apps (the universal apps supplied by default and from the Store) can be controlled to a degree thus:

Programs like
NetworkTrafficView - Monitor the traffic on your network adapter
'sniff' the adapter and show traffic on an ip basis, but not per originating program.

Resource Monitor (from task manager) can give a view of per process usage.
Netbalancer (monitoring is free) is older, but gives a good view (monitoring is free I think)

Here you can see
- java update (manual)
- apps update via Store (manual)
- Roboform (password manager) - perhaps syncing?
- small amount of Avast

It doesn't show specifically process usage by a small email client. This seems to be relegated to an instance of svchost.exe.
