Ms planning Windows 10 updates via subscription

    Hi folks

Saw this in the online version of the UK's Daily Mail (hardly known though as the most reliable of sources -- usually very much a "Hang'em and Flog'em" very Right wing type of paper !!..).

Microsoft to launch a paid subscription for Windows 10 computers | Daily Mail Online

I think this has been spoken about before but it looks nearer the truth this time instead of just Ms's rumour mill.

I'll keep then W7 with Office 2010 on a VM with Linux host. rather than pay another monthly sub.

Centos or Ubuntu Linux distros will increase dramatically if this happens !!!!!

    Cheers

Microsoft can do as they please, I already have 5 Distos of Linux plus Windows 10. I will never pay for an update.

Yes, that will probably be the end of Windows 10 for me I still have all my windows 7 Pro SP1 DVD and file images. I really have not found much in 8, 8.1, or 10 that makes me all warm and fuzzy anyway, Really seems to be just one issue after the last issue. I also have my office 2007 pro stored away. I suspect this was MS plan all along force everyone on Windows 10 let us get used to free, but then we all know nothing is free

As long as MS decides to charge ONLY for Feature Updates, that's fine with me -- I'll just do the Security Updates, as I haven't seen a new Feature in a while that I have any use for ...

Also, regarding the Linux jump ... sorry, don't think so. I've been using Linux daily for over ten years now (and UNIX long before that), and one of the most common issues we see is of folks jumping into Linux expecting it to be a free version of Windows, complete with stuff like IE (or worse, Edge) and MS Office -- and then becoming sadly disappointed when they discover otherwise.

I think it's more likely that folks will simply stop Updating, if MS then starts charging a fee for Updates.

Your Daily 'Wail' article actually quotes ZDNet as its source...

I have the original Win7 systems for several of my machines on spare HDDs I can drop back in if ever needed

    Hi there.
Modern desktop versions of Linux are feature wise almost equivalent to Windows and often with a decent GUI easier to use as well- especially for most tasks that typical users want.

Gaming is another issue but multi-media playing, photo / video editing, Internet Browsing (Fire Fox / Chrome etc), file browsing, backup / restore, networking all built in FREE. For Office it can be a problem but WPS office is fine and for email Thunderbird is OK - plenty of choice.

Most users would find it quite easy especially if the install came from a 1-click type of iso. Security is also streets better than Windows too.

If people don't update Windows just imagine the problems of Virus dissemination so I'd suspect that even with a subscription Ms would have to keep offering FREE security updates (like XP) until the OS really couldn't work any more.

    cheers

There is a Windows 10 Business Edition that is subscription based. You don't get a forever Digital license. Windows 365 if you will. To keep getting updates you have to renew your subscription. I believe that's the way it is for Office 365 now. "Some" consumers have been asking for a subscription based Windows option. I haven't gotten my hands on that Business Edition to have a look see but I suspect its basically the consumer version of Enterprise. Enterprise VL fee's are just out of reach for most consumers. All I've seen so far is a screen shot of its activation page in settings. I can't find it on My Visual Studio Enterprise subscription, and there are no keys listed for it.
That being said, as far as I know, you will still have the option to buy Windows outright. The subscription plan is optional, like it is for office now.

I would take what the Daily Mail say with a large bucket of salt. Unless I see it from an official source of course.

Spacefiller, yes - but copied verbatim from ZDNet. Are the 'useless' too?
