    I have read the windows update log and I noticed it keeps exiting with errors.
    here is one error{{AB89490F94DC} with code Call failed and error 0x8024001e}
    I don't know much about this myself but have managed to get by with a few errors . do you a slow internet connection ? IF you do have a slow connection files may have corrupted and windows automatically rollbacked to prevent damage to system files .

    how does it tell you it is rolling back updates
    After the updates, it tells me that could not perform updates, rolling back to previous version, or similar words.

    Have you upgraded from any previous version of windows before ?
    If you have , maybe OS:C {OPERATING SYSTEM} files OR BOOT FILES are corrupted an therefore cannot update . I ran the chkdsc file checker on a d620 upgraded from windows xp to windows 7 but master file was corrupted anyhow .. TRY THIS ..... Open services ,at the very bottom of the list you will find windows update . Right click it , open properties and see if it is set to run automatically . If it is not change it to automatic on startup

    I don't have a slow connection. I actually download the updates using WSUS and update offline. This system is upgraded from Windows 7. I hesitate to make a clean install because I can end up with an activation issue (which I had on legal Windows 7, to begin with).

    Windows update service is set to run automatically.
