Possible to select specific updates from "Windows Updates" ?

    Hello,

I have several Windows Updates including the Windows 10 1803 which is very slow and ends up with an error message that the 1803 update failed.

After some searching I found there are alternative methods to install the 1803 update which basically removes some Windows 10 features. (Uncertain of any improved changes.)

I'm not certain but think the problem is with our local communication with and around our zip code including Internet, store credit card services and other communications. Our Internet was out nearly 48 hours and finally got back online. However I'm not certain if it's behaving as it should, accessing sites and searching is sometimes unusually slow. Also it's possible Microsoft servers may have become burdened and slower than normal.

I currently have windows update disabled and going to put off installing the Windows 10's 1803 update

I tried downloading this stand alone update from Microsoft Update Catalog ( My PC has Windows 10 64-bit installed)

    windows10.0-kb4103721-x64_fcc746cd817e212ad32a5606b3db5a3333e030f8.msu

    2018-05 Cumulative update for Windows 10 1803 For X64 based system (KB4103721)

However once downloaded and executed, received an error that this update wasn't applicable with my system.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...date-kb4103721

So I probably try to install the 1803 update using an Windows 10 1803 ISO file so I'm able to install the other security updates that are pending.

    http://download.windowsupdate.com/c/...3333e030f8.msu

If windows update retry is selected Windows Update immediately attempts to download the 1803 update while listing the other updates as "pending".

So unless there's a method to download and install specific updates then I'll most likely first install the 1803 update from an iso or exe file then resume downloading and installing the other Windows Updates that were previously pending.

Apparently Windows Update no longer has a "Cancel" option and other options to choose which updates one wants to install? I'm not certain if MS chose to remove Windows Update Options or if they're hidden somewhere?

    Hi albert1

I assume you are on V1709. Reference this article to see the latest V1709 cumulative update. (Further down in article is V1703 Info)

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4338825

You can use this tutorial once you get KB number.

Download and Install Windows Update from Microsoft Update Catalog

Myself I would use the Media Creation tool to create a USB Thumb drive. Currently it will create a key with V1803.

Then basically it is this tutorial to apply.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

In short, set BIOS, plug in key, navigate to Setup.exe on USB, double click. Back up your personal data.

You didn't say what edition you have. If Pro then you can delay feature updates (V1803) within Advance Update options. You also didn't tell us the error that the 1803 update fails with which could help a member recommend a solution.

    Version 1709 OS Build 16299.371

Ok I'll try and find one of the 4GB SD memory cards I have laying around somewhere. My PC and printer have built-in memory card readers so I'll try using a SD memory card from one of those.

After looking at "Advanced Options" under windows update it's a little confusing which option to select to not to download the 1803 update.

If I'm able to disable the 1803 update then I should be able to download the other updates that were pending.

I still think the old method to be better at least from the users perspective i.e. to be able to select which updates to download and install. Has this feature been removed?

After searching my browser history the error code I believe is

    Windows 10, version 1803 - Error 0x80070005

Tried to create a USB drive however requires 8GB media and I only have a 4GB sd. So I'll try creating an ISO file which I can copy to DVD or perhaps I can run directly from the ISO using an ISO created drive.

Works with applications, etc. but perhaps the ISO update requires a cold boot to a physical DVD drive?

There is also an option to not create Window 10 1803 media and install the update online directly from Windows Media Creation Tool.

For my own information I'll first download and try to install directly from an ISO created virtual drive.

My guess is you're saying the upgrade has failed. You mention 0x800070005
Please post a screenshot of your Update History (via Settings) so we can see what's happened.

    See e.g.
Fixing Update on Windows 10, version 1803 - Error 0x80070005

Basic steps to prepare when doing an upgrade:
    - disable or uninstall any AV & security software
    - disconnect any unnecessary peripherals.

Try the upgrade manually using the thumb drive, following the instructions in the tutorial @Caledon Ken posted, and make an exact note of any error messages.

** we strongly recommend you create a full disk image of 1709 before upgrading to 1803. Build 1803 has been problematic for some users. We urge users to use disk imaging routinely to protect themselves- even from disk failure- so they can restore unbootable systems to a previous working state relatively quickly.
E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + large external storage for disk image sets.

    Notes:
You have to upgrade to the 1803 build, then apply a cumulative update. (There may be 1 or more others).

You can do the upgrade without applying the update at the same time (e.g. you could even disconnect the internet and use the thumb drive you've created), or apply the update as part of the upgrade (with internet connected of course).

You have Pro, so can set updates to Notify, which means you can choose to download and apply them when you like.

If I'm able to disable the 1803 update

That can be done, but it's a little tricky. You'd need need special instructions. Best to use the fact you have Pro to defer the upgrade for up to 365 days if you wished to do so. You would then get update for build 1709 for the 18 month or so service life of that build.

I still think the old method to be better at least from the users perspective i.e. to be able to select which updates to download and install. Has this feature been removed?
Hiding updates (blocking them) can still be done but not if the same way. There's a tutorial in the Tutorial section.

Need 8GB and not sure about card.

You need Pro not Home to control. Think its $99 to upgrade.

Yes, you get a cumulative update. I think they done that is all Windows, including 7. Now there are other updates like to Flash and you can "Hide" specific.

    Agree with dalchina

I have Windows 10 64-bit Pro version that came installed with my Lenovo Thinkstation.

Windows 10 is a significant improvement over the older versions I've been using for some time.

Yes you can use the media tool to download an ISO and burn DVD. It is outlined in tutorial.

I believe you can place the iso on your desktop, mount it and run setup. I haven't used this process.

Before doing anything consider creating a Macrium Image. Previously recommend by dalchina, and test Macrium boot disk.

Yes I probably should first create a back using Macrium as I've done in the past. My PC does have a recovery partition which I haven't use. I've owned various IBM and Lenovos such as Thinkpads and Thinkcentres with different types of recovery options including CDs/DVDs and recovery partitions. However Lenovo no longer has their Rescue and Recovery app and now has different options which did have various options if one perform incremental backups. I'll need to take a closer look at my current backup options.

It looks like the other updates already installed from a background process. So I'll just download the 1803 iso update and perhaps install at a later date.

Tried to backup Windows 10 using Macrium however received a stop error

Unable to read from disk - Error Code 1117 - The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. Error code 1117 is generated by the Windows operating system and is always caused by I/O (Input / Output) throughput issues with either the disk or the controller that it is attached to

I tried connecting through eSata and USB however the same error occurs.

Drive C: Window 10 installation is 110GB free out of 235GB

Drive E: Esata / USB drive 251GB free out of 931GB.

So there should be enough free space on drive E:?

I'm wondering where the i/o conflict exists as I haven't had any problems either accessing or backing up to that drive in the past.

Perhaps I should try and run Macrium by booting to a DVD or USB drive?

Installing 1803 update fixed problem with Antivirus unable to run.

I was having problems with Defender's Antivirus not running and read an article iirc to click on Antivirus from Windows Services and select "reset"

After doing so Windows 10 got into a reset loop where upon each reboot would display a message without error code that something was wrong and Windows 10 would check and then reset again.

However the problem continued in a reset loop along with some ????0000000F error code plus a password and userid incorrect and other error messages.

So I eventually go into Safe Mode and tried various things to obtain an standard non-safe mode login. After many attempts I was able to finally perform a stand login, however if I performed a restart to test something the error message page would occur prior to login that something was wrong and Windows 10 would reset.

After several more times I finally was able to get back to a standard non safe mode login and decided even though I couldn't backup Windows 10 using Macrium I would go ahead and install the Windows 10 1803 from a virtual ISO drive.

After more than an hour of which ~45 mins was checking for new updates. The Windows 10 1803 update or upgrade finally installed successfully.

Defender's antivirus from services is now running ok. I haven't yet done a restart from Windows 10 but appears that problem has also been rectified as I think it may have had something to do with Antivirus not being able to run.
