From the drive properties > Tools I ran "Scan" which did find a few errors. I then ran "Repair" which repaired any error. Neither took very long so the drive must have been in good shape.

I'm currently defragging the drive which i rarely do. After the defrag finishes I may run chkdsk from the command line using one or more switches.

    CHKDSK [volume[[path]filename]]] [/F] [/V] [/R] [/X] [/I] [/C] [/L[:size]] [/B] [/scan] [/spotfix]

volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon), mount point, or volume name.
filename FAT/FAT32 only: Specifies the files to check for fragmentation.
/F Fixes errors on the disk.
/V On FAT/FAT32: Displays the full path and name of every file on the disk. On NTFS: Displays cleanup messages if any.
/R Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information (implies /F, when /scan not specified).
/L:size NTFS only: Changes the log file size to the specified number of kilobytes. If size is not specified, displays
    current size.
/X Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary. All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid
    (implies /F).
/I NTFS only: Performs a less vigorous check of index entries.
/C NTFS only: Skips checking of cycles within the folder structure.
/B NTFS only: Re-evaluates bad clusters on the volume (implies /R)
/scan NTFS only: Runs an online scan on the volume
/forceofflinefix NTFS only: (Must be used with "/scan") Bypass all online repair; all defects found
are queued for offline repair (i.e. "chkdsk /spotfix").
/perf NTFS only: (Must be used with "/scan") Uses more system resources to complete a scan as fast as
possible. This may have a negative performance impact on other tasks running on the system.
/spotfix NTFS only: Runs spot fixing on the volume
/sdcleanup NTFS only: Garbage collect unneeded security descriptor data (implies /F).
/offlinescanandfix Runs an offline scan and fix on the volume.
/freeorphanedchains FAT/FAT32/exFAT only: Frees any orphaned cluster chains instead of recovering their contents.
/markclean FAT/FAT32/exFAT only: Marks the volume clean if no corruption was detected, even if /F was not specified.

The /I or /C switch reduces the amount of time required to run Chkdsk by skipping certain checks of the volume.

Returning to part of your original question:
If windows update retry is selected Windows Update immediately attempts to download the 1803 update while listing the other updates as "pending".

So unless there's a method to download and install specific updates then I'll most likely first install the 1803 update from an iso or exe file then resume downloading and installing the other Windows Updates that were previously pending.
    1. You have Pro. Therefore you can set Windows Update to Notify you of an update (so you can choose whether to action it and when); you can set feature updates (upgrades) to be deferred for up to 365 days. There are some other options.

    2. The Tutorial section tells you how to hide (block) a specific Windows update- this can be done for upgrades too, but the upgrade must not have started to download.

    3. However note the pattern of Windows Updates: an Upgrade, followed by a series of cumulative updates; even if you hide one you will get its content in the next. Despite that this can be helpful if a particular release is problematic.

    4. You can manually download and apply a particular update. There's a thread per update per build in the News section with download links and details.

    5. The free tool Windows Update Minitool is rather good and includes many of these options.

Sorry, and I could be wrong, but a 1TB drive usually doesn't run quick.

Do you have a multi disk set up? did you steer chkdsk to right drive

    chkdsk D: /r

Yes I made certain it was the correct drive as I label my external drives to avoid confusion. In this case my external drive is labeled drive K: as I have a Lenovo multi-media drive that came with the PC that adds four drive letters. I prefer to use a multi-media drive installed to the case and motherboard with some quality rather than a usb plug-in types that I'm unable to find when needed and usually break and become damaged after a while.

I left chkdsk running overnight with the results below.

    * another options is to Run a 3rd party tool such as EaseUS partition tool which I think sometimes is able to complete a scan if and when chkdsk fails with an error, etc.

I used /x /f /r switches. I'm not certain if /f is necessary when using as /r? but used it anyway.

I remember reading in an article someone wrote to use /x /f /r in that the "/f" parameter tells CHKDSK to fix any errors it finds; "/r" tells it to locate the bad sectors on the drive and recover readable information; "/x" forces the drive to dismount before the process starts.

Apparently chkdsk didn't find any errors but did display just after Stage 5

Windows has made corrections to the file system.
    No further action is required.

I found I must have been linked to the wrong Windows 10 1803 update

    2018-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4103721)
    Last Modified: 5/4/2018
    Size: 326.5 MB

I tried to install this one and an error message was displayed that it was the incorrect update for my system.

From the tenforums I found the correct 1803 update for my Windows 10 system is

    2018-07 Delta Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4338819)
    Last Modified: 7/13/2018
    Size: 433.8 MB

Both can be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

The 1803 iso file installation that took more than an hour to install, installed and updated Windows 10 successfully.

After performing chkdsk I decided to give Macrium another try.

Using an USB connection it finished the backup successfully.

The drive only has 150GB left. I'm thinking perhaps I need another perhaps larger backup drive, copy over a few of the files from the old drive and keep it in storage as backup.

Even though I don't use them I have a lot of files I just don't want to delete, such as backup of older os's etc.

I backup most of my cds and dvds by creating backup iso images of them. When installing or re-installing softwares I'm able to install from an iso cd/dvd virtual drive.

The catalog should have what you need.

I believe you said you are on V1803. Windows should then take of the maintenance. You should not really be involved.

Think dalchina said you had pro. You can prevent feature or quality updates. Allow the quality. If Windows is not updating on its own something else could be broken.

Great news on the Macrium Backup.

Apparently Windows Update no longer has a "Cancel" option and other options to choose which updates one wants to install? I'm not certain if MS chose to remove Windows Update Options or if they're hidden somewhere?
Using PowerShell module PSWindowsUpdate, you can hide / unhide any update, including feature and Windows Insider upgrades. Hiding an update will disable it, it will not be downloaded and installed when you run Windows Update.

In screenshot I get a list of available updates, using -ListOnly switch to tell that I just want to list updates, not install them. Only one update available, an HP specific device driver I do not want to install. I hide that update, and checking again for available updates, nothing is shown:

On another machine, a Hyper-V virtual machine which is joined to Insider Program, I want to delay downloading and installing the latest Insider build. I'll check available updates, hide Insider upgrade, and check again to see that Insider build upgrade really is hidden. Finally, I install rest of the available updates:

(Notice that PSWindowsUpdate reports feature upgrade size wrong, in this case telling the Insider upgrade would be 88 GB download. That is naturally not true, this is the single bug in PSWindowsUpdate I've found, it reporting feature upgrade size as the combined size of all available versions of that build.)

    Powershell add-ons

Powershell certainly has alot more options and add-in than I can remember from using under Windows Vista.

However I'm not quite certain about the add-on PSWindowsUpdate.

Using the Powershell ISE I see many options for addon but haven't found specifically a PSWindowsUpdate addon.

Many addons appear under a general search for "Update"

I've tried these commands under Powershell ISE without any success.

    https://www.powershellgallery.com/pa...Update/2.0.0.4

I probably need to further study how to use of Powershell as it appears to be a very useful tool which I only remember using a few times in the past to run a script.
