    Fitzy, quick try.

Can you make a new user and throw a couple of Shortcuts on desktop to see if it does same. Local account.

We also didn't ask are you signing in locally or using a Microsoft id?

How would you feel unloading graphics driver totally and re-installing?

Looking at software on desktop you must know your way around. If AMD, Nvidia or Intel video we usually recommend this to remove drivers

Can you answer TC's question, are machines on same network.

Are you currently using A360 desktop?

That Selective may be a false alarm. Mine is like that, has been for like forever. Not sure off the top of my head, but I think if you have any services disabled, it will do that.

I don't think so, I have many startup items and their eventual services stopped and still shows Normal Startup.

Mine is the same as TC's Mike, on both my computers. Always has been. Been like that forever.

Yes, both machines are on the same network, don’t use the 360 desktop (been installed for over a year now), already tried uninstalling graphics card. Both machines were working fine before the latest update was installed and have been ever since windows 10 was installed on desktop and from when I upgraded laptop from windows 10 home to pro 1i months ago. Laptop was fine last mon, tues etc.

I sign in using my Microsoft account on both machines.

Im not that worried about the desktop as both monitors are 4k and the resolution is excellent so icons aren’t that bad, my main concern is the laptop icons and as to why it happened to both machines after this particular update.

This is just an idea Fitzy.
How about making a full image backup using Macrium Reflect, and store this backup image on a 2nd drive. External would be the best method if available, if not any 2nd drive. Also should make a rescue disk on any usb memory stick. This is not difficult to do.
Then after you have made your image backup of your C-Drive. I would try removing all the desktop icons that are over lapping, you will still have the actual programs, your just deleting the short cuts from your desktop. Then move the remaining ones to where ever you want on your desktop manually. Just to see if you can tidy everything up on your desktop this way. You seem to have a ton of icons on your laptop's desktop, maybe removing some and rearranging the others might work. Unless you've already tried this already. If you do try this, making a complete image backup 1st, will let you put everything back the way it was before you start to remove the over lapping short cut icons.

Another method would be instead of deleting the over lapping icons, would be to make a new folder on your desktop, and move the over lapping icons into the new folder, you could name it anything you want, call it "utilities" for example. Just wondering if removing some of your icons, would clean up your desktop and fix this issue....

Right, I’ve unistalled the display drivers and it’s now using the Microsoft basic display adaptor and desktop is still the same. Reinstalled the intel 520 graphics card and still the same.

That's a good idea, I always group them in appropriate folders as would have desktop too cluttered, those few contain few dozen icons for Win32 type programs:

And folder UTILS open for instance:

Right, so I set up another user using a local login and the desktop icons are as they were before the update. I also changed my login from Microsoft to local, but desktop was still the same.
