Fitzy, OldMike is right on. The Windows Restore Point option is, at best, flaky. It does not really restore the entire system back to a previous state, mainly the registry and system settings and attempts to uninstall/reinstall any user apps it finds needs it. Only a full system image restore, all of it, can ensure you are back to a known previous state. If you made a system image backup using the old Windows 7 Backup and Restore, that could be attempted.
Failing that option, a Repair Install is your next best option. It will NOT destroy or delete any of your data or programs. It only rewrites the system files and settings. And OldMike's suggestion to get Macrium and use it is very wise, indeed.
