Windows 10: How to Skip the 1803 Feature Update?

How to Skip the 1803 Feature Update?

Is there any way to skip the 1803 Feature update?
I heard it is very buggy at the moment.

My Windows Updates settings are set to Semi-Annual which is meant to delay any feature updates for most businesses. But I just got it awaiting download just now.

Is there a way to just skip the feature update and download all the others related to Security?

How do you block a feature update?

See this post I've just written- quoted from others here.
How can I block upgrade from 1703 to 1803? - Windows 10 Forums

    A better approach?
    1. Create a Windows disk image of what you have now. (You are using disk imaging routinely, as we constantly urge users- e.g. Macrium Reflect (free)- I hope)

That's your backstop in case something goes wrong.
    2. Try the upgrade (and subsequent update) and see how it works for you.
    3. You have 10 days to roll back to previous build (your current one).
    4. If that fails, you can restore your disk image.

All builds have limited time support- see link quoted above.

How long have you had feature upgrades deferred? And how long have you set them to be deferred?
Mine is still working - I have build 1709. I set deferral to 365 days.

That should not be happening, Pro should be able to defer the features update with that setting.

Did you change it to Semi-Annual Channel from Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted) after the features update was shown as available? If so, have you Restarted since you changed the branch readiness level? Also, there's a separate option to defer features updates for up to 365 days, try setting that too. Try a Restart (not a Shut down, that would use Fast Start up, a Restart doesn't).

If it still insists the 1803 features update is available run the Windows Update Troubleshooter, that should restart the check for updates from scratch. If that fails, try resetting Windows Update.

I've just posted a report of another 1803 bug, so fully understand yr concerns. I've seen quite a few issues, and there many different issues with 1803

I have now set the time so that updates are due at times when I switch off - not sure if this will work; only time will tell.

M$ philosophy of these 6 monthly upgrades stinks, each one creates more risk - what ever happened to if its not broke don't fix it?

this is interesting, have a read.....www.computerworld.com/article/3232632/microsoft-windows/how-to-block-windows-10-april-2018-update-from-installing.html?page=2

That's what happens when the old crew at MS is replaced with tide pod eaters.

I had the same or similar experience. My 1803 Windows Update kept failing so I looked for alternative methods to install 1803 and the security updates.

I was about to install the security updates manually however while looking at different methods to install the 1803 update outside of Windows Update. Windows Update installed the security updates without installing the 1803 update of which it displayed as failed.

So If you wait long enough Windows Update may install other security updates other than 1803 without any user intervention. I think with Windows Update some patience is required as it sort of has a mind of it's own.

Older versions of Windows I remember being able to select which updates I wanted to install. However Windows Update sort of decides on it own even under earlier versions of Windows when it wants to install an update. Sometime would install immediately other times could not find an update unless other updates were installed, etc.

There are alternative methods to install the 1803 update such as download the 1803 update from Microsoft Update Catalog (exe file)

1803 update version KB4338819 Microsoft Update Catalog

    2018-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4103721)
Last Modified: 5/4/2018 Size: 326.5 MB

This 1803 update version worked for me.

However be aware there are other versions of the 1803 update from Microsoft Update Catalog such as
    2018-05 Cumulative update for Windows 10 1803 For X64 based system (KB4103721)

Once downloaded and executed, I received an error that this update wasn't applicable with my system.

Not knowing about KB4338819 I chose to download an 1803 ISO file and install the 1803 from a virtual ISO DVD drive. Applications such as Daemon Tools 10 Lite https://www.daemon-tools.cc/products/dtlite enables one to mount an ISO as a virtual DVD drive.

The ISO file installation has an option if you want to check for updates before proceeding to update. After selecting to check for any updates the installation took another ~45 mins checking my Windows 10 installation for any needed updates. The entire update process after several reboots took approx. one hour.

Did you not know that Windows 10 File Explorer can mount ISOs? You don't need 3rd-party aids, it's already built in to windows. Just double-click on the ISO file and you get a virtual DVD.

And this "new feature" was introduced in Windows 8!

Oh yeah forgot about that. I've have been using earlier version of Windows with Daemon tools for quite a while.

Recently upgraded my old Vista machine to a Thinkstation with Windows 10 installed.

There are other methods to choose which Windows Updates are installed.

One method is to use PowerShell with the PSWindowsUpdate addon

Update and Upgrade Windows 10 using PowerShell

Once the PSWindowsUpdate add-on is installed you can choose which updates to install by a simple commands

To install all available, not hidden updates rejecting or accepting each installation manually

    Get-WUInstall

To also install additional Microsoft product updates:Get-WUInstall -MicrosoftUpdate

    Get-WUInstall -MicrosoftUpdate

Powershell has a whole bunch of commands and add-ons to perform various types of tasks.

Just type Powershell in the search bar will provide two choices Powershell command line and Powershell ISE (gui version)
